Enescu's Legend favourite performance

Partly to humour SB and partly for the sake of sharing opinions on TM I decided to start a new thread...

It is not about comparing Personalities (Phil Smith and Manny Laureano for example) but comparing strictly performances/records.

First of all, I don't pretend to have heard all major or famous recordings/performances. But from those I heard so far, I liked the more Phil Smith's recording on Phil Smith New York Legends - Philip Smith, Principal Trumpet CD

Probably I should point out that Phil Smith's is a studio recording while Manny's is a live performance.

1. I like Phil's long phrase (no breath till the end of the phrase on the 5th bar). I have been trying to do that, but it is quite difficult...
2. I found that Phil makes some really nice rubati in the bar 11 and Mvt
3. In Mouvt. the Phil's articulations are very smooth (slurs) and delicate (multiple tonguing). I like that very much. Same for the similar at Ier Mouvt
4. The triple crotchet's at the 2nd Mouvt is a bit faster (or at least it feel's like) than Manny's which gives a more virtuosic and tempestuous character/effect.

The rest is more or less similar.

What I really like in Manny's performance is the sound. It is simply gorgeous

I may like some Manny's other piece's performances better than Phil Smith's. But that's another thread

I'm glad that you posted this.

Everybody is entitled to personal taste. Some like red and some like green. That doesn't mean that one is a better color.

Re: Enescu's Legend favourite performance

I wanted to add an opinion here, if that is okay.

Manny is stupid good. Phil is unstoppable. Wynton holds a special place in my heart. Etc.

Personally, I really enjoy the voice that Hakan Hardenberger brings to this piece. I could break it down (not dancing...), but the gist is that I believe he captures the essence of the individual motives and the piece as a whole with more verve than just about anybody else. I've seen him do it live and it was better than the recording. For one thing, he isn't afraid to depart from metronomic time and let the piano and trumpet lines operate independently. I really like it when musicians do that. It takes guts. And he does things like on every dimension of the music.

None of the above get all the notes all the time. Sometimes they frack big. But that's okay because I just don't care. I want to hear people who stimulate my musical instinct.

Andy

That's exactly the kind of discussion I wanted to make happen. It is not about who's the best (we have lots of these and they rarely bring something valuable) but about personal taste. Sometimes it may be difficult to break down a performance in order to explain why somebody likes what he does...but I guess that trying won't hurt anyone.

I like romain leleu the best for legende. I have heard the hardenberger and the smith, of those two I prefer hardenberger.

I prefer the Hardenbergerīs Enesco too, but the Charles Schlueter interpretation is a very nice Enesco reference.

trumpetnick--

I think it's a really good thing that you can explain in detail why you enjoy or prefer one performance over another. It is one thing to have an opinion, and quite another thing to know why you have that opinion. For what it's worth--I had the privalage of hearing Manny live on a weekly basis when I lived in Minneapolis and, although the YouTube video is worth checking out, that recording does not do him justice.

Re: Enescu's Legend favourite performance

Jimi,

These are very fair points. I never had that privilege. I never intended to base my opinion on a performer (in this case Manny) just on one single performance. This was much more about Enescu's Legend and my personal taste. The explaining why I like something was always something that took part in learning a piece and make decisions concerning style. I never say to myself (or at least trying) that I will imitate performance X of piece Y. Instead, I would listen to different performers and recordings and identify things that I like and try to synthesize my own concept of any piece. Concept don't always turn into reality, but at least I know what I want. To do that I have to identify and analyze the approaches of trumpeters who played the thing before me. This may appear like an over-analyzing, but that's my own approach perfect or not.

Re: Enescu's Legend favourite performance

At Chosen Vale two years ago (in 2007) Matt C. had a great recording of Pierre Thibaud playing the Enescu. Aside from the beautiful playing, it was a beautiful and intense interpretation. There was something of the risks he was taking that made it very exciting--something that is lost in safer performances. Matt do you still have that (if you are out there in computer land)?

My own personal bit: I've learned tons from each performance I've heard!--using qualitative judgments like better or worse tend to ruin it for me (although I hold certain performances near a dear to my person).
best,
-chris

Re: Enescu's Legend favourite performance

Anyone heard Jens Lindemann at the Ellsworth Smith Competition? Its very good! A lot of youthful energy...not as refined as some, but worth a listen. I got it from a friend who got it from someone else who may have bootlegged it. It is great to listen to someone, in a competitive situation, really lay it out there.

I hope it is Jens at Ellsworth...or else I've been listening to a lie!

The recording also has the Gregson Concerto, Bohme, and Zwilich. Good stuff!
