Favourite Recordings

Hello Everybody,

My name is Duncan. I'm 16 and I live in Toronto. I'd like to know what some of your favourite recordings are (particularly of mahler 3 and tchaikovsky 5). I have cso/levine for the first, cso/abbado and vienna/gergiev for the second. I'm interested to see what else comes highly recommended as well. Not just orchestral music, either.

Some of my favourite:

nyp/mitropolous - selections from prokofiev romeo and juliet suites
cso/bernstein - shostakovich 1 and 7
gryphon trio - shostakovich piano trios, 7 verses of blok
kirov/gergiev - scheherezade
cso/giulini - pictures
st. petersburg/temirkanov - shostakovich 5 and 6
st. lawrence string quartet- shostakovich quartets 3, 7 and 8
nyp/bernstein - mahler 6, tchaik 5
berlin/karajan - alpensinfonie
schwarzkopf/szell - four last songs

Re: Favourite Recordings

Check out the recordings by the Minnesota Orchestra.

All are very good.

I like the Mephisto & Co. CD

Also any of their Beethoven recordings.

A plus is that Manny Laureano is playing principal trumpet on all of them since 1980.

Re: Favourite Recordings

Hi Duncan,

A vintage snowstorm that wouldn't effect my trip over to Eastman but severely limit options of getting home has caused me to postpone my trip. I look forward to another shot later this winter/spring.

Re favo(u)rite recordings, take a look at one of the first threads on my forum: http://www.trumpetmaster.com/vb/f146...scs-24585.html (Desert Island Discs)

Levine's MET Parsifal (DG) remains as true to my ears and heart as it did back then. The Norman/Masur/Gewandhaus recording of Strauss' Four Last Songs (Philips) has wormed its way onto my current list, as have all of Bruce Dickey/Concerto Palatino recordings on Accent and Lotte Lenya singing Kurt Weill songs on Sony.

You'll note that I never listen to recordings due to a particular trumpet player being found within, unless (s)he is the soloist. With all respect to Chuck and s.coomer, I have vastly different musical priorities and am thrilled by the whole, not simply a component.

For some really crappy --but free (!) -- listening, go to edwardcarrollmusic.com and click on media.

Best and I look forward to meeting at some point,
EC
ps: check out Simon Rattle's Mahler series (DG) on DVD, if you have the chance.

Ahh, the Strauss has a way of doing that, doesn't it?

Hope you're happily stranded somewhere safe!

Re: Favourite Recordings

I picked up that recording of the four last songs last night at the opera. I suppose I would have bought Parsifal as well, but it was nowhere to be found in their cd store. Norman doesn't have the same stridency as Schwarzkopf - that pure clear sound is a good sound. I'm not sure which recording is better so far. I agree with the idea of listening to the whole; the kirov orchestra for example has a kind of vibrance that the new york phil doesn't (on the tchaikovsky I mentioned), this vibrance sounds like they understand how good it is that they're in an orchestra. The strings in new york sound a little too graceful, they weren't alive in the same way the woodwinds and brass were, and kirov had that magic in all its sections. Phil Smith has got a handful more chops than the guy playing first in kirov (although, if anybody knows this recording, I've never heard faster double tonguing than in the last movement), but it's better.

Russian orchestras usually have that kind of thing about them, as far as I can tell (I have only three recordings). Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

Re: Favourite Recordings

Otto Klemperor conducting Mahler 2 with Elizabeth Scharzkopf and the London Philharmonic. The best recording i have heard of this symphony. I also love Furtwangler, Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, with the Berlin Phil playing Strauss Four Last songs. I have heard some English sopranos singing the four last songs but i think it needs the authentic German diction. Schwarzkopf is my favourite soprano! Now there is a voice to base your trumpet sound, and phrasing, upon.

Duncan,

I used to know the Kirov Orchestra (Gergiev is a friend) and St. Petersburg (nee Leningrad) Philharmonic well, having spent a few weeks teaching at the conservatory there. See http://www.trumpetmaster.com/vb/f146...net-24591.html (Chez Cornet)

One thing become strikingly apparent -- most large Russian orchestras put more bodies onstage than do their North American or Western European counterparts. The string section is often based on a ratio that starts with 10, not 8, basses. This changes the depth of string colo(u)r dramatically and means that the brass have to raise their bells and blow like hell (which also changes the colo(u)r, naturally).

Fun, isn't it? Great that you're already noticing these things.

Cheers,
EC
