Re: Fred Mills

I got to do a business transaction with Fred last Dec. He purchased a Yamaha Chicago C from me. When going through the details he informed me that he was buying it for a friend of his in Brazil that was a fine player but could not afford a good C. That briefly told me the kind of man he was. I have always and will always enjoy his performances and arrangements. My brief encounter with him just made me appreciate them that much more.

Re: Fred Mills

He was absolutely an inspiration to all, and one of my trumpet heros early in my playing.

Re: Fred Mills

I had dinner with Fred Mills and Hank Nowak earlier this year. Freddie gave me a copy of a CD he made with the Pentabrass Quintet........it is fantastic!
Here's a video with that group.

During the US tour in the beginning of the year before meeting Wilmer I had the chance to meet Fred for first and so sadly last time in my life. I also got that CD from him - it is excellent I recommend it to everyone.

For anyone who has memories and stories with Fred - you can share them on the newly created Facebook | Memories of Fred Mills group.

MTROSTER will become famous soon enough
Re: Fred Mills

The world is a sadder place for the loss of Mr. Mills, who was not only a great horn player, but a warm human being. For those of you who believe in the afterlife, I'm sure he's jamming with the greats.

Re: Fred Mills

Fred was just in my shop 3 weeks ago getting some work done on his horns. He was as remarkable a person as he was a musician. I always enjoyed the times he would come to the shop with "an idea" that usually involved lots of soldering. It was an honor to have him as a friend. He truly was, and continues to be, an inspiration to all who knew him or heard his fine playing.
