Re: Fred Mills

Please read this memo from our brass chair at University of Georgia. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Dear Friends,

There will be a service celebrating the life of Fred Mills at 3:00 PM on Sunday, September 20, 2009. The service will take place in Hodgson Hall of the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center.

The event will feature music and stories, the two things that defined Fred's life. It was Fred's stated desire that his memorial service remain upbeat and festive. I hope that you will be able to join us to help celebrate the very full and rich life of our friend and colleague.

If you have a desire to share your memories of or reflections on Fred's life, we would welcome a note that would be shared in some type of display at the event.

Please feel free to shoot me a note if you have any questions. Thank you for your kind notes and words of support during this tough time in the School of Music community.

Best regards,
David Zerkel

Re: Fred Mills

Sorry to hear about Fred's accident. The "Old" Canadian Brass in the last video was the "real" one for many years for me. Saw that group in Kalamazoo a couple of times and they also played a Joint concert with my band some years ago. Mills and Romm's sound was fantastic.

Jim Houston will become famous soon enough
Re: Fred Mills

This is a terrible loss. When he first came to UGA I was just in shock. He was one of the most "fluent" players on th piccolo that I have ever heard and to watch him it looked like it was effortless. He will be missed by all.

Re: Fred Mills

We would like to put together a photo collage for Fred's memorial concert. If you have any pictures that you think would be good to include, please email them to fredtribute@gmail.com.

Thank you.

Re: Fred Mills

This is truly a great loss, but I love the notion of celebrating Mill's LIFE as we all deal with his passing in our own ways.

I considered Romm and Mills to be two of the greatest role models for me as I was developing as a player, right up there with Mendez, Maynard, Doc, Clark, Dizzy, Clifford, et al. One of my favorite recordings is the Umbrella side of the Tocatta and Fuge in D minor - some of the most amazing brass playing EVER and Romm and Mills are so dialed in that they funcion as one instrument. Mills picc playing was a joy to listen to as was his regular playing. His arrangments were all wonderful.

However, I mis-speak here. His trumpet playing IS a joy to listen to and his arrangments ARE a joy to play and hear. He can still be with us "in spirit" - the beauty of what he did and his life!

Peace!

Nick

Re: Fred Mills

It seems to me appropriate to post here what appears to be the very last Fred's performance (which I just found on youtube):
