![]() | Re: Get That College Teaching Gig: Part IV In the symphonic world we also have tenure and we also have due processes for firing an orchestra member. It's only right, I believe. Nobody should be immune from dismissal if they aren't doing their job properly, no one. The process is very long and drawn out and someone has to really run afoul of their job requirements before any action takes place. As students are accountable for their actions, so must the ones in charge of educating them be. I'm not surprised a former communist advised you to cool your political jets. It didn't get much more repressive than good old fashioned Soviet-style communism. Although, the Red Chinese have learned to put up good appearances these days. ML P.S. ![]() | Re: Get That College Teaching Gig: Part IV Lots of people who love music don't love the things it takes to make and sustain a career in music. Then, that sometimes develops into forgetting that you loved music once or why you wanted this career in the first place. Sad, but all too common...and not just in academe. But, what would I know. I'm a "Type C"!!! |

![]() ![]() | Re: Get That College Teaching Gig: Part IV Noonan, There are many different ways to cross the minefield described in parts 1-3 of this series and there are also many of us that are perfectly satisfied that we've survived the process and find ourselves in wonderful teaching environments. It's been very interesting for me to read these posts and much of the advice on offer is accurate and tremedously useful. Bravo. I, on the other hand, teach in a music school surrounded by fabulous colleagues who give enormously of their time and energy to make the time (and horrific expense!) spent in college worthwhile. I'm also lucky to have a Dean who's not only a great artist and visionary, but a fabulous friend and colleague as well. I entered academia late in my career believing as I do that the best teachers have had extensive experience as performers. I've made certain personal sacrifices to be part of this but, believe me, I'm content on every level (well. . . I wouldn't mind being paid more, but. . .). Best and don't be afraid to follow your dreams, EC |
