Guerrier's Haydn

TMers,

For those of you that are unfamiliar with David Guerrier, please note the following:

David Guerrier was born in 1984 in Pierrelatte, in the south of France , and began to study the trumpet there with Serge Vivares at the age of seven. He soon won gold medals in the national music schools of Villeurbanne and Aix-en-Provence . At the age of thirteen he won First Prize in the Markneukirchen International Trumpet Competition in Germany , and the following year he won First Prize in the Porcia International Competition in Italy . Mr. Guerrier studied trumpet and baroque trumpet at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Lyon with Pierre Dutot and Jean-François Madeuf.

Mr. Guerrier was the youngest winner of the "Victoires de la Musique Classique" Award, as the best instrumental soloist of the year on prime time French television. He captured first prize at the 2003 Munich International Music Competition of the ARD, the first trumpeter to be awarded the First Prize since Maurice André won in 1963. A nonpareil virtuoso, he won First Prize in the 2002 International Trumpet Guild Competition in New York at the age of 17, and First Prize in the 2000 Maurice André International Trumpet Competition in Paris when he was only 16.

In addition to his astounding trumpet career, Mr. Guerrier has been named Principal Horn with the Orchestra National de France under the direction of Kurt Masur.

I think we can all agree that this is an uncommonly talented kid.

Enjoy his performance of the Haydn Concerto, played on keyed trumpet. His cadenza sounds so right, especially with the period band.

Best,
EC

Re: Guerrier's Haydn

Here comes another one which has some humorous bits:

Seems to me like he is using a french horn mouthpiece on that cornet?

I guess he's an ok player...

(and maybe he's using an old cornet and mouthpiece? it kind of looks like my antique cornet receiver and mpc)

Re: Guerrier's Haydn

Bag and others,

Please note that he's solo HORN, not trumpet, in Masur's orchestra.

Yes, that's a period cornet and obviously tuned higher than ideal for this particular performance.

David's known for playing the Tomasi concerto on the first half and Strauss #2 on the second with various European orchestras.

Best,
EC

That's probably how he got his nickname "The Extra-terrestrial" that he is famous with in France. I looked at some old mouthpieces like the famous in the past KosiKup mouthpieces

but still the mouthpiece I see in the video looks much more like a french horn mouthpiece...However, some french companies used to make cornet mouthpieces with such external shape, like Antoine Courtois

So, the mystery of the E.T. remains

Nick,

You know, don't you, that the cornet was originally designed to be a member of the horn (cor) family?

Best,

Re: Guerrier's Haydn

Of course I do. But a little bit of research can't do any harm, right?
