| Piano User | Hardenberger CD Re-issue For those of us who missed out the first time, Arkivmusic is re-issuing the Hakan Hardenberger CD "Endless Parade" which includes the Peter Maxwell Davies Concerto, the Michael Blake Watkins Concerto, and Harrison Birtwistle's "Endless Parade," all conducted by Elgar Howarth. This CD has been out of print for some time and it's been incredibly difficult to find used copies. This is the description of the re-issue: "This CD is a reissue produced by ArkivMusic and is fully authorized by the original record label. The music on the disc is exactly the same as the original. Cover art, spine, and back cover are faithfully reproduced though slightly modified. Liner notes are not included." Not optimal, but it's three great performances and it's $15 as opposed to the $50 or so you would pay for a used copy (provided you find one). They can be purchased from arkivmusic.com or amazon.com. |

![]() ![]() | Matthew, Thanks for the notice . . . this is very good news for those who missed the original release. Did you know that Philips only made runs of 1000 for all of the Hakon CDs? This is commonly done by the "major" labels: they typically keep a careful eye on important test markets (New York, Los Angeles, London, etc.) and sales in these markets over a two week period determine if a larger run is warrented. It's one of the reasons that Hakon is no longer at Philips (and also a reason that the so-called "major" labels can be bought today for a song). CDs and record companies are becoming artifacts/history before our very eyes anyway. A bit of advice for all TMers: if you see a recording that you might be interested in, don't wait...buy it! It will probably be gone the next time you look for it (suggestion to all: the new Hakon Gruber/Eotvos/Turnage disc on DGG. It's wonderful and bound to be a small seller. Thank God for Volvo for funding it in the first place!). Cheers, EC |

![]() | Hardenberger on DGG Maximum 1000 runs for the Hakan CDs on Philips - unbelievable. Glad to see that I have most of the Hakan recordings on Philips. The recording industry is in trouble... Thanks for the hint with Hakan's new DGG recording. |

![]() | Kanne, I'm going to hop on this portion of your quote, begging your forgiveness for doing so out of context. Can we really say that it's in trouble? Isn't it just re-shuffling? It's become clear that the big record companies are always getting bigger and are not interested in selling products that don't yield profits. But classical music has NEVER been profitable, overall! That doesn't mean there's no market - just that those of us who are interested have to make things happen ourselves. It's sad that the days are gone when artistic quality had something to do with the way record companies do business. But there are actually MORE opportunites on the horizon today for orchestras, soloists, and even brass groups to expand their scope and marketability. I'm excited to see a company like Arkiv take the initiative to reissue rarities and "niche market" items like the Hakan CD. We trumpeters have buying power - we should encourage Arkiv to re-release all of Hakan's Philips catalog! Last edited by robertwhite; 10-22-2006 at 05:21 PM. |

![]() | On a slightly different, but related topic, there was a review of Hakan's Aerial CD in the NY Times Arts and Leisure section today. Here is a link to the reviews - it is the 3rd one listed. The review is by Vivian Schweitzer. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/22/ar...=5070&emc=eta1 Not bad, coming less than a week after the article about Charlie Vernon and the new trombone concertos! |
