![]() | Hindemith TMers, I was glancing at Tom Stevens' website this morning and found this marvelous quote from Paul Hindemith: "The duty of these music teachers is to instruct professional musicians and amateurs, and among the professionals so instructed, new music teachers are produced. Now, if each music teacher produces not more than more than two new music teachers per year-which is not an exaggerated estimate-and if no interfering war, plague, or earthquake hinders this happy propogation, the results can easily be seen: after the first year we will have ten thousand new music teachers, in the fifteenth year every man, woman, and child in the U.S. will be a music teacher, and after about twenty years the entire population of the planet will consist of nothing but music teachers." . . . love it, EC |

![]() | Fud, Trumpet blasts were amongst the events at the first Olympic Games in ancient Greece. The goal was quantity, not quality (obviously!) and featured leather straps which kept the mouthpiece fully in contact with the face. I dare you to have a mouthpiece like this designed before you audition for Seiji Ozawa. Off to practice quiet long-tones, EC (music teacher) |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Trumpet blasts - that's what we called beer drinking at college. Quantity was also important back then, I can't remember anything about leather straps though.................. |

![]() | Judging was done on horseback. Trumpeter No. 1 played, and the judges rode until the trumpet was just inaudible. That place was marked, and the procedure was repeated until all trumpeters were finished. (There is some debate as to whether or not a judge by the name of Violis really existed or was a popular legend told amongst trumpeters.) The leather straps were (and are) used to keep cheeks from exploding. |

| The tradition continues at ITG, visit the trade halls and you will hear the modern interpretation - attemped Double C. Always remember - if you can't play it, blame the instrument you are holding - the way to achieve those extra marks from the judges |
