![]() | How does a Master Class work? Hi: I've never been to a master class and I am wondering what happens in one. Does the lecturer play, does he give a lecture, does everyone bring their instruments, etc? I am a comebacker who would like to attend a local master class, but I am apprehensive about playing in front of alot of people who are better than me (not yet ready-for-prime-time). thanks rob |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: How does a Master Class work? Rob, Good morning. There is no one-size-fits-all template for a masterclass, but most involve the person presenting the class teaching others in a public setting. For example, masterclasses at a place like Chosen Vale usually involve a teacher (let's say Steve Burns) and 5 or 6 participants. Repertoire has been selected and rehearsed in advance and each participant receives about 20 to 30 minutes of coaching in front of the audience. Steve might demonstrate a bit (he usually does) and the audience might ask questions or be solicited for comments. I've always felt that working through musical and technical issues in masterclass are equally valuable to the listener and performer -- simply a matter of perspective (behind or in front of the horn) -- and a wonderfully supportive environment in which to work. We're all in this together, afterall. Best, EC |

A true master class is as Ed described, not to be confused with a clinic, which usually involves the clinician playing some, showing some tricks and tips, and answering questions. Some people pad their resumes by calling the clinics they attended master classes. Great chances to learn at both, though. Have fun.
