![]() | Introduction Greetings, I am a cornet/trumpet player and retired educator (early retirement at 50--I am 52) and beleive i can contribute to some of the discussion as set forth in this sub-forum. Below is my signature, and gives an idea of my teaching credentials. I also have a wide background in performance. These days, I spend most of my time trying to be a cornet player without sounding like a trumpet player playing cornet! My current obbsesion is the Eb cornet. I am trained as a classical player, but am what one might call a jazz player, and also have done much commercial work. Although an American by birth, I reside in Paris, France; and for part of the year in Tokyo/Utsunomiya, Japan. Some of you will recognize me from my posts on another trumpet chat site. Some of you will also take note that I am not shy when it comes to controversial subjects. My glimpse of my jazz performance can be gleamed from the MS Sites I have provided below. Also you might take note of some of the luminaries in the jazz world who have commented on my playing. I`m a bit of a rare bird, having attained a Ph.D. in music composition; played and written with Phil Woods (as a trumpet soloist); toured the world with David Byrne and the Talking Heads Rei Momo group; was a tenured professor of music and finalist for an the associate dean position at my last, and final, university post; and I lived in New York City (Park Slope, Brooklyn) for over twenty years (80s-2001.) I would say that given my background, I have a tendency not to suffer fools gladly. But i will quickly add a caveat that I have the utmost respect for Mr. C.; as a trumpet player; an educator; and a statesman of the trumpet at large. As such, I am looking for an informed debate on a host of topics; and hope I may be able to shed some small light on certain topics from my experience as a trumpet player, educator--and all `in the trenches,` as it were. I am, at 52, still active on the performance scene in Paris and Tokyo as a jazz/commercial cornet/trumpet player; and have a number of international students from various places in the world, in jazz improvisation and music composition, via the marvels of modern technology. As an academic, I am published by MIT Press, Open Space Magazine (founded by Benjamine Boretz, one of the founding editors of Perspectives in New Music) and have acted as a consultant to a number of publishers including Norton & Norton Co. and Jamey Aebersold. I have also taught and published outside of music in the areas of contemporary media and popular studies My main focus these days is to learn how to properly play the Bb and Eb cornet in a variety of settings/generas and to keep active as a trumpet player. I have no intention of straying from this area-as I find the conversations here most interesting; and especially about the current state of academia. I look forward to be part of your community.
