J.M. Haydn Concerto No.2 (in D major) absurd

I have been listening for ages how difficult was, and what a challenge it was for the soloist...For so long, that I was postponing for long time to study and learn it. Now, when I am very close to that end I am getting kind of disappointed I found that once somebody get the chops (I am not yet there, but very close, I am working on it for about 3 weeks) there is no much of a challenge...The concerto is quite simple, so once one manages not to get distressed about those "freaky" high notes seems to be not that challenging as there should not much of rhythmic, timing, ensemble, texture or interpretation, intonation etc issues... I just don't get it...The Brandenburg 2 seems to be much more challenging on the whole and yet, there is much more recordings of it then recordings of the above mentioned concerto...is it just that is not interesting enough?

The only 3 recordings I am aware of are Maurice Andre, Wynton Marsalis and Adolf Scherbaum...I have heard also of some Polish or Check trumpeter who recorded it, but never found a recording on nat...well I am playing it on my spada piccolo (the 1st valve slide trigger occurs to be very handy)... all of this looks quite surprising to me

Re: J.M. Haydn Concerto No.2 (in D major) absurd

Nick,
the composers of the baroque era were no different than their modern day counterparts. They write for the forces at large. I suspect that Haydn had a high note ace without the technical finesse of a Gottfried Reiche although the head trumpeter at the Salzburg court, J.B. Resenberger had some pretty healthy laurels from L. Mozart: "is an excellent trumpeter who has made himself very famous, especially in the high register, through the extraordinary purity of his sound, through the quickness in runs and his good trills".

I guess any comparison to Bach will pale however - he IS simply the greatest composer that ever lived.

Niklas Elund plays this on his "The Art of the Baroque Trumpet Volume 4" NAXOS 8.554375S and BLOWS AWAY ALL of the picc performances (in my sometimes not so humble opinion!).

That whole Eklund series shows what can be done on nat (after all it was written for it). Nick, see if you can get hold of it before your performance...it puts a different tonal character to it altogether.

Guys,

I don't want to sound irrespectful, but if I trust the amazon, the CD you are talking about contains only the J.M. Haydn Trumpet Concerto No.1 in C major. Please check your info before posting. I should have done the same as the D major concerto appears to be No.1. Whatever the number, you are talking about the C major concerto. Robin's info was however interesting to me. Actually, I had purchased all the Art of the Baroque trumpet series, but No.4 appeared to be out of stock, so I got everything else, but not No.4

Nick,
The Concerto#2 is in fact in C on my score (Musica Rara) and on the Naxos album that I mentioned.

Re: J.M. Haydn Concerto No.2 (in D major) absurd

FYI, the first concerto is in D, the second in C.

I'm aware of five recordings of the one in D: Andre/Paillard, Andre/Stadlmaier, Friedrich, Marsalis, and Scherbaum. There are many more recordings of the one in C, including at least two on baroque trumpet (Eklund, Steele-Perkins).

Re: J.M. Haydn Concerto No.2 (in D major) absurd

The one in D is not actually a concerto, its excerpts from a church sonata. I believe the high note is meant to signify the moment of transubstantiation in the mass. I think. Its a while since I looked into this.
