Ed, I wish you to take part in this thead...I don't have any particular technical problems juts timing (playing together with piano is a real issue for this concerto) and few intonation problems linked to stamina issues | |

![]() | Nicolay, I'm afraid that I'm unable to contribute anything here. I listened to a tape of George Vosburg giving the first performance of Williams Concerto in Pittsburg some years ago. I loved his performance but found the piece to be totally uninteresting. Sorry. I suppose that a wide variety of tastes is what sustains music as art. Did I tell you that I gave a three day masterclass at the Sofia Conservatory back in 1988? I remember being rushed onto the empty stage (save a portrait of NL) and the audience standing as I appeared. I also remember being glad at that moment that I had worn a tie (uncommon in ECness)! Best from Los Angeles, EC ps: Do you know the Zimmermann Concerto "Nobody knows the trouble I see"? It's very effective, in my opinion. |

| Mezzo Forte User | I never played the Zimmerman Concerto...I am not sure that I am able to play it correctly (I tried to read it 1 year ago, but there was too many intonation problems for me)...Sure, I may try one day, but this day has not come yet. Of course, there is many concertos, which are clearly more interesting than J. William's but Maurice Andre told me once than I should learn as many concerto as I can...Both Jolivet and Tomasi Concertos, I can think of some Ewazen and Turrin pieces which are very interesting (and I am quite sure that you would not disagree with me on that) are much more interesting but after all everyone plays Jolivet and Tomasi, that's why I decided to bring to the masterclass something different...I wish I was present in 1988. Tell me if you are to come again around. |

| Pianissimo User | Re: John Williams Trumpet Concerto I agree about the Williams and the Zimmerman. A few years ago, Andrew Balio played the Zimmerman with the Baltimore Symphony (on the same program as Unanswered Question and Miraculous Mandarin...four shows in a row!) and I learned it at the same time. What a cool piece. It has a lot of core, not just flash. The Williams....ugh.... |

![]() | Re: John Williams Trumpet Concerto Wilmer, I had done something at Peabody that afternoon (probably hearing Lake Placid auditions?) and was given a ticket by Jim Olin, the first trombonist. Jim and his wife Jane are more old high school buddies. I actually do go to concerts you know . . . just not as often as I'd like. Tag, you're it :) EC |
