Ligeti: Mysteries of the Macabre

I'm trying to find the music for "Mysteries of the Macabre" and have had no luck besides rental libraries. I can't even find anything on interlibrary loan. I'm not sure if the version for trumpet and piano is published but I can't even seem to find the score. If anyone knows where I can find a copy (or if the piano version if published), please let me know.

Thanks,
Matthew

P.S. If anyone knows where I can buy "Heraldiques" by Tisne and/or "Quattro Pezzi per tromba" by Scelsi, please chime in.

Quatro pezzi should be available from sheetmusicservice. Heraldiques is published by billaudot and I can't see why you wouldn't be able to get it from sheetmusicservice or hickeys. Good luck.

Matthew,

I have both the Heraldiques and Quattro Pezzi (the latter has become standard repertoire). Both are published. Contact me offsite if you continue to have trouble finding them.

Mysteries of the Macabre isn't published nor will it be. It's a setting of a scene from Ligeti's opera created by Garry Howarth (for you trumpet historians, the trumpeter that Max Davies wrote his op. 1 trumpet sonata for, one of the founding members of the London Sinfonietta, and now a very good conductor).

If you're ambitious enough, buy the score and create your own -- pretty worthwhile, in my opinion, as nobody but Hakan plays it and Ligeti is an iconic composer!)

Good luck,
EC

I've located both Heraldiques and Quattro pezzi but unfortunately both are back-ordered and Quattro pezzi is apparently out of print temporarily. I've done a few piano reductions before so I'll keep trying to locate a copy of the score for Mysteries of the Macabre and see what I can do with it. Thanks for all the help so far.

Matthew,

My private messages seem to be down. E-mail me your info at edward.carroll@dartmouth.edu and I'll copy the Scelsi for you.

Pax,

I was perusing the Schott site and, as you may know, Mysteries of the Macabre was arranged for Trumpet OR Soprano and ensemble. There is an arrangement that is specified for Soprano and piano. I'm going to try to get ahold of it and see if the soprano part is still interchangeable with the trumpet part in this arrangement. Here is a link to that version:

http://www.schott-music.com/shop/1/show,39413.html

I'll keep everyone updated.

EDIT: Scratch that. I didn't notice the difference at first in my tired state. Sorry. It looks like that's just an arrangement of three arias from from the opera but is still called Mysteries of the Macabre.

EDIT 2: Scratch that again. Now I've noticed that the score for trumpet ensemble also says "Drei Arien." I'll try to get both scores and see what I can do with them. I guess this is what happens when you decide to skip sleep and work on these things...

FYI, I don't know if he's performed it in public, but Peter Masseurs (Co-Principal, Concertgebouw O.) has recorded Mysteries with the ASKO Ensemble on a Teldec cd called The Ligeti Project I.

JJ,

I didn't know. Peter is an old friend from my days in Holland and a fabulous player.

Is it the same Howarth setting?

Best,
EC
