Superb link! I love the "exit music"! He is an incredible musician. What a sound, phrasing, and musicality!
It always irritates me that the "big composers" of the past used piano and strings as their featured concerto instruments.
Thank goodness for Stockhausen! What a rich legacy of trumpet music he has left behind!

Charlie & BUM,

Thanks for pointing this out, Charlie, and I can't agree more with BUM's statement above. We heard Tristram Williams play Pieta, Oberlippentanz, and Eingang und Formel last week at CalArts and I suspect that history will view HhS with the same reverence it does Beethoven over time.

Re Markus' celebrated falling out with his father, he confided to me at the end of Chosen Vale last summer that he was ready to start teaching (and perhaps playing?) his father's music once again and I hope to be able to make a small "Stockhausen Kursus" part of the Chosen Vale curriculum in 2010 (knock wood).

TMers, it's time that each and every one of you start checking out Markus Stockhausen's body of work (http://www.markusstockhausen.com/) He's a spectacular trumpeter, flugelhornist, composer, jazz musician, and free improviser. Imagine, if you will, growing up in the household of a genius musician composing pieces & roles particularly for you. Some of us try to be, but Markus is, a true Trumpet Master.

Discuss, please.

Best,
EC

Re: Markus Stockhausen Interview

I had the privilege of seeing Marcus in a Masterclass many years ago. He was incredible and surprisingly modest! There is no doubt that his father's music is of another universe and requires an extra-terrestrial technique and understanding of music to perform it. I would struggle to scratch the surface of such music, never mind being able to interpret it. It is nano in detail colossal in impact, a bit like the food of Heston Blumenthal! Have you ever been to the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival EC? I heard quite a lot of his music at that one year. A particularly memorable concert was Octandre! What a breathtaking piece of music! Can you ever imagine Stockhausen reaching the popularity of say Stravinsky or Messian? Is Stockhausen's music designed to be exclusive? By this i mean is it music which does not actively attempt to engage itself with the listener, but rather music the listener has to try and actively tune into? A few thoughts

BUM,

Re Huddersfield, I've never been but an Australian composer who has grabbed my attention, Liza Lim, is now on the faculty. I've just commissioned her, as chair of that particular ITG committee, to write a major work for trumpet & persussion that will be premiered in Sydney in 2010

Will Stockhausen ever gain the popularity of Stravinsky & Messiaen? Maybe, but let's remember that one is primarily a theater/opera composer (KhS), one mostly a ballet composer (IS), and one a celebrated symphonist/organist/improviser (OM). Apples and oranges, methinks, but sweet fruit all.

The "goal" (should there be one) of all music, in my opinion, is to engage the listener. Perhaps Stockhausen's works ask a bit longer concentration than some, but are very compelling both visually & aurally to those like me who will make the effort to be there to experience them. . . no fast food on that particular table!

Cheers, mate
EC

I just wanted to highlight this comment. This is a pretty awesome philosophical stance to have. It's so simple, yet so completely accurate IMO. "Engaging the listener" can have so many different implications for all kinds of different musical contexts and still be accurate. This goal is unassuming, universally relevant, and I love it. I'm in a stage in my development where I find that I am trying to develop my own definitions of music and my own philosophies, and I usually just end up stealing from others. I hope you don't mind if I still this one. :)
