McGill University

TMers,

Many of you know that in addition to teaching at CalArts and Dartmouth College, I’m also teaching at McGill University in Montreal (recently appointed Associate Professor). I’ve become an unabashed admirer of both the city and the school and hope that the excellence of both, coupled with unusually low tuition fees (the cost of housing in Montreal is astonishing low as well), will appeal to those who are preparing to take the next step in their training.

Please let me know if you're interested in auditioning. If so, I can answer questions here or we can talk privately.

Best,
EC

The Brass Faculty at the McGill University's Schulich School of Music has established itself as the foremost in Canada and is rapidly becoming one of the premier courses in North America. The Princeton Review has ranked the Schulich School of Music among the top ten music schools in the world. Our distinguished resident and visiting teachers are active at the highest professional level, and include principal players with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, l'Orchestre Metropolitain du Grand Montreal, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and world-renowned solo performers. Orchestral and ensemble playing are central to the curriculum but our students are also challenged to look beyond traditional avenues and kept abreast of professional opportunities in a wildly changing and evolving musical landscape, utilizing extraordinary resources such as the Sound Recording Area and CIRMMT (Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology) found within the school. We value the past but are looking ahead at McGill, and our teachers are committed to illuminating paths that develop individual musical invention in parallel with musical discipline.

The Trumpet Studio

Students currently enrolled in the trumpet studio are pursuing Bachelor of Music (BMus.), Licentiate in Music (LMus), Master of Music (MMus.) and Doctor of Music (DMus.) degrees under the guidance of Edward Carroll, Jean-Louis Chatel, Russell DeVuyst, and Paul Merkelo.

Individual biographies can be found at
www.music.mcgill.ca/brass/Trumpet%20Studio.html

In addition to working within the celebrated Orchestral Training Program, which includes the McGill Symphony Orchestra, the McGill Contemporary Music Ensemble and the Wind Symphony, members of the trumpet class also take part in studio classes and intensive chamber music study, including mixed ensembles. Eminent visitors over the past two academic years have included James Thompson (Eastman School, ex MSO), James Pandolfi (ex Metropolitan Opera), Jens Lindemann (UCLA, ex Canadian Brass), Rod McDonald (Gewandhausorchester Leipzig), Roger Zacks (Duisberger Philharmoniker), Karen Donnelly (National Arts Centre Orchestra), Manon Lafrance (Canadian Brass, Conservatoire de Musique de Montreal), Geoff Thompson and Trent Sandheim (l'Orchestre Symphonique de Québec).

2006- 2007 Highlights

• Performances of Arnold Schoenberg's monumental GURRELIEDER with Kent Nagano and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.

• Vincent Cichowicz Memorial Concert alongside members of the MSO), l'Orchestre Metropolitain du Grand Montreal, National Arts Centre Orchestra, and l'Orchestre Symphonique du Quebec, directed by Edward Carroll.

• NewTrumpet concert at Dartmouth College and subsequent collaboration with graduate students in Dartmouth’s department of electro-acoustic music.

• World premieres of works for solo trumpet(s) by Canadian composers, including Ryan Purchase, Alex Eddington, Trevor Grahl, and Alexandria Fol.

Recent Student Successes

Recent graduates of the Brass Faculty have played with New World, Montreal, National (Kennedy Center), Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Nova Scotia, and Laval Symphonies, l'Orchestre Symphonique de Québec, the National Ballet Orchestra, Tafelmusik, Les Violins du Roi, The Gustav Mahler Chamber Orchestra (D), and the Aukland Philharmonia (NZ). They have also held fellowships at the Aspen Music Festival (AMFS), the Tanglewood Music Center, the Pacific Music Festival, the Music Academy of the West, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada and the National Academy Orchestra. Our students have also recently participated in the Lucerne Festival Academie (CH), the Ensemble Moderne Academie (D), the Festival of New Trumpet (FONT) in New York City, the BachacademieStuttgart (D), the Round Top and Brevard Music Festivals, the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Domaine Forget, and at Chosen Vale.

Re: McGill University

Annie,

Do come up. We will be exploring an interesting mix of traditional and non-traditional musics in my class over the next few years and, judging by your work at Chosen Vale last summer, you'd fit in marvelously. The town is unbelievably cool as well. Very special.

E-mail me at home and let's talk.

Hope you're well,
EC

Re: McGill University

I will be graduating in December 08 with a bs in ed. I am interested in continuing with a MM at McGill. I am working on my recital now. I am going to do Hindemith Sonate, Enesco Legend, Honnegger Intrada, and most likely some baroque piccolo piece that I have not yet determined. Would this be acceptable repertoire for an audition? If not, what would you expect to hear during an audition? Also as a US citizen how does that effect the chances of gaining acceptance?

Thanks
Tom

Re: McGill University

Tom,

McGill is truly an international school. One passport or another will make absolutely no difference. Your program is fine. You might throw in a few excerpts (your choice) just in case (?)

Pop me an e-mail and tell me more about your background? I look forward to talking with you at edward.carroll@dartmouth.edu (my various e-mail addresses get forwarded to this address)

Best,
EC

Re: McGill University

St,

As Brem mentions McGill is an English language university. One of the benefits of studying in Montreal, however, is that you can/should learn to speak French as well. More bang for your academic buck?

Best,
EC
