| Piano User | Nancarrow on Trumpet! Ed mentioned this performance by a trumpeter named Joseph Motter to me some time ago and when I finally heard I thought it needed to be shared. I've heard a lot of arrangements of Nancarrow stuff (Alarm Will Sound also does a great job), but a lot of them end up improvising instead of remaining true to the score. This one is unbelievably accurate. Hope everyone enjoys this: Last edited by mahaberio; 07-11-2008 at 04:47 PM. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Nancarrow on Trumpet! Matthew, Joe studied with me at CalArts. He has a freakish connection to polyrhythmic music and is more intuitive in that respect than anyone I've ever met playing any sort of music or instrument. It helps that he's also very accurate and plays effortlessly on his C trumpet from pedal to double high C. Joe brought piano study #7 to me in his first lesson and explained that he couldn't solve his wish to transcribe it for trumpet and piano using Finale (too complex for that notational software) until he thought of breaking the piano line up into an orchestral score. Reserving one line for himself, he wanted to perform the piece with midi. I suggested instead that we hook his laptop up to the Yamaha Disklavier that I conveniently have in my studio. We removed the face in order to be able to see the hammers furiously pounding away and the rest, as they say, is history. This version of Piano Study #7 was first performed on one of my occasional "20/20 Foresight" concerts at CalArts on April 9th, 2005, with Joe standing alongside the disklavier. I don't know which was more memorable for the audience, his note-perfect performance or the deadpan look on his face as he was doing it. The audience (Tom Stevens was in attendance, by the way) went nuts. Fun stuff. Music is supposed to be like this, isn't it? Best, EC |
