The next Bernstein

This is a link to a video of AMISMO, the Honda robot designed to conduct an orchestra. That is right, you heard it. It is basically an oversized metronome, but it is kind of a cool concept.

Re: The next Bernstein

Cute...and probably a good ploy for recruiting kids as future concert-goers. But you can imagine the wise-cracking that went on in the ranks of the orchestra! Next time they get a guest conductor they don't like, they'll be saying "bring back the robot!".

Cheers,
Chas

It may be a cool concept but let's be honest...would you pay to watch that gimmick on an on-going basis ?
What that symphony need is a bassist like a Mr.Charles Mingus who would toss his instrument at that robot before the 1st set is over.

My sentiments exactly !
On a more serious note,Lenny introduced music to the kids and the public and yours truly
is a beneficiary of his great musicial contributions.

Plug it in and count me out !

Re: The next Bernstein

I wonder seriously about the musicians who'd allow themselves to be conducted by a robot. (Well. it is Detroit after all, and robots are "in" there.) Real conductors use more than a stick and their hands. The most lauded use(d) their eyes as much.
I'd like to see robots perform valuable and challenging tasks to benefit us all, and art should be left to humans. Elephants, chimps, and cats can paint too, but it isn't art.
These stunts are not productive, and take attention away from issues that do matter. For example, a robot in the White House would be a step up.

Amen to that latter statement, Veery! I think the key word regarding the conducting robot is "stunt." It reminds me of the old Fellini film "Orchestra Rehearsal," in which, in one scene, a giant metronome was placed in front of the orchestra. I forget the exact message and idea Fellini was trying to convey, but the effect is the same. I'm not going to lose any sleep worrying about robot conductors just yet. "Virtual orchestras" on shows is another matter!

Keep it live,

Re: The next Bernstein

I say we start using the kids who play the conducting video game for Nintendo Wii to lead major ensembles. I bet there are some hidden pros out there who are 11 years old. Better yet, train the robots on the Wii game. Maybe they can be programmed to learn a little musicality from that game.

I mean, come on...

THIS guy shows promise. Why can't a robot?
