Re: Old School

Shostakovich wrote fun parts for trumpet players, we played this symphony in Brooklyn............the Wire Choir was not amused
The 9th Symphony has a nice solo too

Re: Old School

Sofus,

It isn't a church; it's the Great Hall of the Leningrad Philharmonic -- one of the 5 best acoustics I've ever played in, by the way.

Best,
EC

Phil is a product of his environment, just like this russian guy. Now you all know what FF, FFF and FFFF mean in russian music!

I am sure that the KGB had secretly measured Bill Vacchianos trumpet and mouthpiece and made sure this guys equipment was BIGGER!

In any case, a wonderful playdoyer for Bb trumpets in a symphonic setting (I have Shostakovich 5 in February - on the Bb)! Some fresh inspiration here!

Re: Old School

I sent that clip to my friend Tristram Williams in Australia who reposted it on Facebook as "trumpet porn". Broke me up.

Re: Old School

Thanks Ed......... until a few minutes ago my favorite recording of that movement featured Maurice Murphy, I believe with Previn........... now there is a tie (at least for the "wild with abandon trumpet playing")

Re: Old School

On a non-trumpet but musical level, listen to the stability of the tempo (all back-beats) and compare it to the WDR/Bychkov performance found to the right (rushing, front of the beat). The old Leningrad under Mravinsky, not unlike the old Chicago under Reiner, was excellent due to their collective ability to listen, not follow.

Note also that the Leningrad traditionally put the largest orchestra in captivity onto the stage -- at least 5 stands of basses, etc.

Wowza bowza,
EC
