| Overlooked French Methods Hi Ed Last summer I went to Paris for the first time. While there I purchased alot of French trumpet music including the Arban method by Leduc and the Franquinn method. I also bought the 15 Balay etudes, Chavanne etudes and the Pourett etudes. I found all of these books interesting and challenging. I am surprised that more players here in the US do not use these books. (other than the cost) Do you have any thoughts on this? Are there any of these books that you use or like? Are there others you find that are overlooked? Thanks Mark Dulin Winthrop University Music Department |

![]() | Re: Overlooked French Methods Hi Mark, In addition to the commonly played etudes by Bitsch I have 2 volumes of etudes by H. Duhem (Belgian/French) that I've always liked. I'm also using some of Pierre Thibaud's exercises in my classes at McGill and CalArts. My closet is filled with Russian and Bulgarian etudes that I picked up while giving masterclasses in those countries. We reach a point that we have more materials than need, really... Tell us about the Ballay and Chavanne etudes? Best, EC |

| Re: Overlooked French Methods I have nothing to add to this, Ed. I clicked because my bleary eyes read the post title as "Overcooked French...". I thought "Cool, Ed is soliciting culinary advice, maybe there's a good recipe for something...". Then, I looked a bit more carefully. Going back to bed now... ML |

| Re: Overlooked French Methods Are the Chavanne etudes the same ones that Voisin edited (25 Characteristic Studies - Interntational Music Co.)? I find them to be similar to the Arban's Characteristic studies - good technical challenges, but not as musically developed as Charlier, Bitsch, Porret. I actually like the Falk Etudes Atonal - great for developing a different set of ears. |

| Re: Overlooked French Methods While in Belgium I was turned on to "Dix Etudes - Concertantes et d'Interpretation" by Raymond Sabarich [Ed. Selmer]. I highly recommend that one. Also, "Enseignement de la Trompette - Etudes Practiques" by Rene Laurent and "Douze Etudes Variees pour Trompette" by P.M. Dubois. [both LEDUC]. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Overlooked French Methods There was a recording of the Sabarich Etudes that was fabulous. The trumpet player was Louis Menardi.....I think. Gil Johnson used the Rene Laurent Etudes. He played the first etude on the piccolo trumpet. Beautifully. Wilmer Last edited by wiseone2 : 03-24-2007 at 05:19 PM. |
