Pieces for Trumpet, Piano and Strings

Ed and Folks,

Can anyone suggest any other pieces for trumpet, piano and strings than Jolivet Concertino and Schostakovitch concerto?

An young conductor, friend of mine, asked me today if I would do something with his orchestra, but should include piano as well. He suggested Schostakovitch...well it is a a very nice piece, but tends to be preformed rather often here, but he is not sure that he can get hold of Jolivet orchestra parts.
So, any bright ideas?

Thanks, guys!

Re: Pieces for Trumpet, Piano and Strings

Nick,

Jaan Rääts wrote a beautiful Concerto for your instrumentation. It would take a ton of learning and rehearsal, however.

You can contact di-arezzo http://www.di-arezzo.co.uk/detail_no...cle=DURAN03398 about a score for the Jolivet Concertino. I'm fairly certain that the parts are rental from Durand (probably not too expensive?). I think that it's far easier to put together than the Rääts and far less common than the Shostakovich.

Best from Montreal,
EC

Thanks a lot Ed...Shame that there is no more pieces for such instrumentation...Probably we will stick either to Schostakovitch or Jolivet...My preference go to Jolivet however

Nick,

You should. The Shostakovich is a piano concerto (hiss, boo), afterall...

Cheers,

Re: Pieces for Trumpet, Piano and Strings

Nick,

Another idea: somewhere in the distant past I remember an arrangement of the Hummel Concerto (Eb) made for Maurice Andre that was published in score form only (Billadout? someone else?).

You might be get lucky and track this down online. If found it would require creating a set of parts...

Best,
EC

Re: Pieces for Trumpet, Piano and Strings

Nick,

My friend Jim Stephenson recently wrote a double concerto for Empire Brass trumpeter Marc Reese and his wife Lisa Leonard who is an excellent pianist. Jim's website is Music of composer and arranger James Stephenson. (He was the 'composer-in-residence' at the recent ITG Conference written up in the current Journal.) It's a piece you should look into!

Good luck,

Jeff Work

How about the Saint-Saens Septet for trumpet, strings, and piano?

Re: Pieces for Trumpet, Piano and Strings

Nice idea, but the Saint-Saens is scored for string quintet (2 vlns, vla, vc, db), piano and trumpet. To my ears (not that they are worth much), it isn't that well suited for the quintet to be played by orchestra.

Re: Pieces for Trumpet, Piano and Strings

Brian,

I'm with Sandy on this one -- the Saint-Saens would be inappropriate (and is a rather crappy piece to my ears anyway).

Nick,

If you're still watching this thread Jeff may have provided a good solution. Please do take a look at Jim Stephenson's excellent website. He's a wonderful composer and an ex trumpeter to boot -- an ex Lindenau/Interlochen Arts Academy person (cue applause!).

Cheers from LA,
EC

Re: Pieces for Trumpet, Piano and Strings

Thanks guys. Though I will definitely look into jef's concerto I am quite anchored in the jolivet/schostakovitch....actually I may have to perform both on the concert... I know that this would be rather tough, but that is what the conductor wants for the moment. I don't like the Saint-Saens septet either, and seems to be quite inappropriate as the program will include mainly modern/contemporary music, which can fit nicely with some baroque pieces, but SS seems just way out of line.
