![]() | Ramon Humet Ed and all, I just got back from a magnificent OSM concert, which featured the premiere of a new work from Messiaen Prize winning Spanish composer Ramon Humet (of whom I had never before heard). The piece, "Escenas de Viento", was strikingly beautiful, beautifully played, and, well, cool (with a great offstage trumpet solo part). I was curious to see if you or anyone else has heard of/heard the music of Mr. Humet-the mp3 samples on his website are worth checking out (ramonhumet.com)...however his list of works don't seem to include any trumpet music (perhaps a distinguished international trumpet soloist/educator/frequent commissioner of new works should take action PS The concert also included Joshua Bell playing the absolute crap out of Corigliano's Red Violin concerto...it's so cool to see great music played by the actual musician who has undeniable ownership of it. |

I'm not aware of his music but was amused that he won the Messiaen prize. The French are thought to have written the best Spanish music. Perhaps the tables are being turned? (!) Most orchestras have come to an understanding that programming the same music over and over is an artistic and marketing death spiral. We need to attend these concerts, as you did, and spread enthusiasm for the new works that qualify (which you did). Bravi a tutti. Now go practice for Thompson next week and the upcoming concerto competition, willya? Best, EC |
