Self Discovery

TMers,

I was practicing tonight (note to my students: calm down, please) and thinking about the process of building/rebuilding playing. At very least, trumpet playing is an humbling act of self discovery.

My question to you tonight is this: what have you most recently learned about yourself via your practice?

Watching with interest,
EC

Re: Self Discovery

I've learned that i need to work on my patience and calm down while practicing. I tend to get very frustrated if i can't get my tone working. I learned that some times you just have "those days".

Re: Self Discovery

Paying attention while playing can be very useful (and not getting distracted)
And also, everything affects breathing and sound - like the angle my feet are at while standing

Re: Self Discovery

One thing that seems to happen with age is that one is a little more patient with oneself and with the raw facts of physical nature. When I was young, I used to get frustrated when things weren't working...the emotional reactions to those factors which created difficulties actually hindered my progress and took much of the joy out of the process. Now, thanks in no small part to my Zen practice, I "go with the flow," regardless of how daily circumstances and conditions present themselves. I enjoy each moment of practice without beating myself up - sort of a reverse golden rule (do unto thyself as you would do unto others!). As Chevalier sang it so well in Gigi, "I'm glad I'm not young anymore!"

Weird to put into words--when I can't get exactly the sound I hear in my head before playing, I get the exact sound my trumpet and mouthpiece produce, and it is different but not bad. Accepting what comes out the bell can be hard sometimes.

Weird.

Re: Self Discovery

I've learnt that to relax is sublime - and also to actually use the advice given by many of you, particularly ROWUK and Vulgano Brother (VB), and to just do it, has allowed my to move on in a very satisfying manner. Once again I offer my humble thanks.
(Why WOULD anyone play Viola, VB?)

The trumpet is probably the one thing that I refuse to get board of and loose interest in.Its given me an activity that I can enjoy everyday. Its taught me to persevere and not be a quitter.

That a comeback can be easily set back by not quitting soon enough and refusing to take many days off.

Violgany,

Are you sure that you haven't picked a viola instead of a trumpet?

Re: Self Discovery

I always learn to practice what I preach. 4000+ posts here on the "right way" and I don't always take my own advice, and pay for it. The last couple of weeks I have been a good boy though!
