Selmer Paris Piccolo (Short Model)

Ed,

Do you have any thoughts on this piccolo? I'm looking to see what I want to get and $$$ is definitely an issue. Any thoughts on the best buy for the buck if you are not up on this particular instrument?

Good morning from Montreal.

I've always liked the sound and blow on the old Selmer piccolos. Intonation can be an issue, however, and good intonation is critical on such a short tube.

The Schilke P54 (and many of the knock-offs on this design) is super. I've had a Scherzer that I've enjoyed in the past and know that the Thein piccolo is absolutely fantastic. It's tres expensive, however.

My suggestion? If you're serious about playing the piccolo, save your money and buy a good one. Some of the old fish-horns cause as many problems as they solve.

A fish-horn (term coined by Mark Gould, by the way) is a trumpet that plays like a stinking bucket of old fish.

Graphic, but not as graphic as we could be. . .
