![]() | Sore Lips -play or not Hi: I'm an amatuer trumpet player (44 yrs old). I think I overdid it a couple of days back and my upper lip is sore. Should I not play at all until the soreness goes away (or take it easy and practice anyway)? I am an amatuer so I don't "have" to play - no rehearsals, no gigs, etc. Thanks Rob |

![]() ![]() | Re: Sore Lips -play or not Rob, Maurice Andre used to take one aspirin every night before going to bed to combat swelling. It's probably a good idea after a big day (his were mostly big days) and recent studies suggest it can be good for your heart as well. That said, leave it in the case today and practice fully tomorrow concentrating on air flow and resonance. You'll be fine. Best, EC Last edited by ecarroll; 03-17-2007 at 03:37 PM. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Sore Lips -play or not I find a cold beer MUCH better for swelling....... After heavy duty gigs I play a lot of long tones - very quietly (I won't call this a "warm-down" in fear of getting that issue started again..........

![]() | Re: Sore Lips -play or not If they're really sore, I'd skip a day or two. If you beat them up by practicing while they're sore, it will just prolong the soreness or make it worse. If they're not too sore, some easy abbreviated practice time is OK.

He said, 'Do what you can'. The more I think about it, the more sense it makes. You may not be able to practice everything, but you can probably do something of value, as opposed to doing 'zero'. Pay attention to your body and 'do what you can'. IMO, & YMMV.......

![]() | Re: Sore Lips -play or not Also, it doesn't hurt to vacillate between ice and hot water on your chops after a heavy work day. Take an ice cube (or sack of ice) and set it on your lips for a couple of minutes, then take a wash cloth dipped in very hot water (but not boiling) and place it on the same place. You can feel the blood rushing back into the lips. Do this a few times after you're done playing for the day or before bed. Your lips will thank you. |
