Stockhausen

TMers,

I suppose by now many of you have learned about the passing of Karlheinz Stockhausen; a man of unique genius, a tremendously controversial figure, and, one might argue, the most important composer of trumpet music in recent memory.

I never met him but will miss him terribly.

Re: Stockhausen

Trent,

He had such an expansive and diverse output that it's hard to pinpoint a few "must-haves." The Klavierstücke and Gruppen are pretty important works from the '50's. Another good one is Mantra and I would also recommend getting your hands on as much of Licht as possible. Much of this is hard to find and you'll probably have to order from the Stockhausen Verlag online.

The music world lost a very important figure. An ensemble I'm is in the process of programming one of his works for our inaugural concert. His music is generally very difficult to get together but extremely rewarding and it's the least we can do to honor this great visionary.

Re: Stockhausen

I was first introduced to Stockhausen's music while studying Miles Davis' Aura. I wish I knew more of his work. There are a number of really good clips on his website: Karlheinz Stockhausen Official Website - Stockhausen.org

Great stuff guys, I can't wait to check this stuff out next week (have a bunch of downtime in Cleveland... anyone in the area want to hang?).

Keep the info coming for "newbies" like myself.

Re: Stockhausen

Markus Stockhausen, Karlheinz's son is an absolutely tremendous trumpet player. Karlheinz wrote a great deal of music for his son, and i think the trumpet played a central role in his Opera (about the planet Syrius where Stockhausen was born apparently). I attended a masterclass with Markus many years ago, and was "blown away" by both the trumpet music of his father and Markus's extraordinary viruosity and modesty (unlike his dad of course)! As you all can imagine this is music from a different galaxy and requires an extra-terrestrial technique and imagination to play it. It is such a shame that Markus does not receive more exposure in Europe.

Rest in Peace Mr.Stockhausen

Markus is an absolute FREAK on the trumpet and an incredible inspiration! I can't wait to work with him at CV this year.

Best,
