String effective for J.M. Haydn Concerto No.1 in D

Dear Ed and folks,

Can anyone tell me how many string instruments are required/recommended for the performance of the above concerto? I know that it may be unusual to ask such a question in a trumpet forum but here is the reason:

I want to record the 2nd mvt for demo purposes and may be able to make my boss to gather the chamber string ensemble but I will be most likely the one who is going to conduct as well. I am getting after Xmas my Zoom H4 which I will use for that recording. There will be probably no remastering, no editing. Just will play few times the movements and keep the best shot. So how many strings (with specifications on each group)? I will be using the arrangement that I found on Werner Icking Music Archive: Michael Haydn . I tried to find some sources on the net, but found all kind of info, except what I was looking for.

Nick,

You can record it effectively with one on a part. If you feel that more are needed, go with 4/4/3/3/1. Always avoid 2 on a part within string sections (vibratos are subject to clashing).

Who says you can't ask musical questions on a trumpet forum? :)

Cheers,
EC

If Brass section can do an ensemble vibrato (I heard the London Brass doing that on concert, and found amazing when all the section is vibrating together) why strings can't? Well, the question is rather hypothetical as our strings are quite far from LSO level and vibrato will be not a main concern...

Nick,
the reason is the "quantity" of beats to prevent an audible clash. Experiments with small chamber choirs show that one soprano is better than two, but three or four also have a pleasant sound.
My suggestion would be a couple of more strings to give the orchestra more volume and density, allowing you to play without having to hold back as much! That will allow you more recording "freedom"! Not everybody prefers a pseudo historical anemic orchestra sound!

When I had the third part in an orchestra I noticed that three trumpets always sounded better than two--I never knew it was because of vibrato!
