tpt chamber rep./need everyone's input! Hi all, My name is Jeff Work. I've been asked by my friend Marc Reese (Empire Brass) to write a modest article for the ITG Journal and my deadline has crept up on me a bit! (Marc edits its Chamber Music Column.) The basic subject is: CHAMBER REPERTOIRE WITH TRUMPET, vague though that is. I'm leaning in the direction of 'mixed ensembles' and away from strictly brass music. (I'll also likely exclude vocal works, most baroque works, and works with only trumpet and keyboard.) My 'target audience' will be, perhaps, the very good grad student who's looking to give an unusual piece or two on a recital. What are your favorites? A few of mine are: Hindemith Three Pieces for Five Instruments (tpt/cl/vn/db/pf) Martinu Revue de Cuisine (cl/bsn/tpt/vn/vc/pf) Heinrich Sutermeister Serenade Nr. 2 (tpt/ww5tet) Francaix Le Gay Paris (tpt/nine winds) Saint-Saens Septet (tpt/str5tet/pf) Hilda Sehested (cornet/str5tet/pf) Ewazen Quintet (tpt/str4tet or 5tet) Ewazen Trio (tpt/vn/pf) Stravinsky Octet and L'histoire Yves Chardon Sonata (D tpt/cello) William Walton Facade (narr/sax/tpt/vc/fl/cl/perc) My article and my list will be incomplete in most people's eye's, I'm sure... I just want to give people, especially students, a good starting reference point. Looking forward to finding some undiscovered gems, with your help! THANKS TO ALL. ~Jeff Work PS. I would welcome tpt/perc suggestions but will probably mention only a few, since that's an entire article in and of itself. Are there a few that can't be omitted? (ie. Jolivet Heptade)

Re: tpt chamber rep./need everyone's input! I know that you have said you are likely to ignore the baroque works, but surely Brandenburg is worthy of a mention. One of the finest moments of trumpet in a chamber setting.

Re: tpt chamber rep./need everyone's input! You should contact David Scott at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, LA. He plays in a quite actice group called Pastiche (clar, trpt, perc, piano) and knows more about chamber lit for trumpet than I ever will in a lifetime. He'd be a great resource.

![]() | Re: tpt chamber rep./need everyone's input! Jeff, This is a enormous topic that should stretch well past your deadline I'm afraid. That said I'll get cracking at it after teaching today. Off the top of my head, a few vital titles to start that don't appear on your list include: Tower: Black Topaz (flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, 2 percussion, piano.) Wolpe: Quartet: (trumpet, tenor sax, percussion, piano) Vackar: Concerto (trumpet, percussion, piano, double bass) Stockhausen: Halt (trumpet & double bass) Stevens: Variations on Clifford Intervals (For trumpet, vibraphone, double bass) More soon, both from me and from the membership (?) | Re: tpt chamber rep./need everyone's input! Have you got a copy of Trumpet Technique by Delbert Dale? There are some listed in the back of that book that I don't think have been mentioned yet (will find my copy and list them if nobody else has one). |

Re: tpt chamber rep./need everyone's input! For mixed instrumental chamber ensemble, off the top of my head: Alfredo Casella - Serenata (neo-Classical style -1927, I think). Trumpet, clarinet, bassoon, violin and cello. 6 mvts:Marcia, Minuetto, Notturno, Gavotta, Cavatina, and Finale. Strings tacet in Gavotta, winds tacet in Cavatina. Jose Ardevol - Musica de Camara (Cuban composer b. 1911). Trumpet, flute, clarinet, bassoon, violin and cello. Interesting piece. 5 mvts: Ricercar, Allegro, Quasi Habanera, Fanfarria, and Finale. I also arranged a Bach Ricercar a 6 for the same instrumental ensemble as the Ardevol. Haven't published it, but would be happy to! I did a recital with these 3 pieces as the anchors, and added the Yves Chardon that Wilmer mentioned. I'll try to find my complete file - just rearranged my studio and it is packed away in one of these boxes...... Best, Sandy

Re: tpt chamber rep./need everyone's input! Jeff- Additional pieces can be found by searching under the subject heading "Trumpet with instrumental ensemble" in any library holdings. (That is the official Library of Congress Subject Header, at least.) A quick search of the NYPL Circulating collection came up with: Ellen Taaffe Zwilich: Concerto for trumpet & 5 players (flute/piccolo, clarinet/bass clarinet, percussion, double bass, piano) Shigenobu Nakamura: Chamberconcerto no. 4: Rei: for trumpet and marimbas Leslie Bassett: Concerto da camera (flute, clarinet, trumpet/flugel/picc tpt, violin, viola, cello, percussion and piano. and of course, the Stefan Wolpe Piece for Trumpet & 7 Instruments (flute, clarinet, horn, violin, viola, cello and bass). More later Sandy
