trouble fluttertonguing in the upper register.

I've been having trouble flutter tonguing when I get into the high register. Anything above a middle c isn't not easy for me to play fluttertongued (it starts sounding bad after a middle c, and I lose control). I can't consistantly flutter tongue above a G (above the staff) and can only go up to a B above the staff flutter tongued. Anyone have any suggestions on how to do this? I've looked all over and can't find tips for fluttertonguing in the upper register. Although, I haven't seen music for fluttertonguing in the upper range, it would be a cool affect during a plunger solo to flutter tongue high. Thanks.

Re: trouble fluttertonguing in the upper register.

Doing some chromatic scales up and down flutter tonguing might help. start at a low g the go to g# then a then Bb, etc.

Re: trouble fluttertonguing in the upper register.

Being able to flutter tongue well in the upper register requires a ridiculous amount of air. A trumpet mentor/teacher of mine once suggested flutter tonguing through tough passages when practicing in order to make the final product that much easier to handle. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you need to build up to your ability to pump that much air through the horn to be able to flutter tongue up there. Oh, and by the way, please try to not pass out while doing this...

Re: trouble fluttertonguing in the upper register.

Hi Guys, I have been watching the advice given to Trumpetman; a piece "Opening - No One Mourns the Wicked" was given to me last week-end and it requires a Flutter Tongue on a Rit at G above the staff. I cannot roll my "Rs", so can you help explain another way to do it, or how to learn it. The performance is in May so I have some time to do it. This is my first time at a First trumpet for a whole performance. Any help or comments welcomed.
Cheers Peter

Re: trouble fluttertonguing in the upper register.

I have moved this into Ed Carrolls forum as this is something that the players really into "modern" music work on. The insite from them is better than any "General Trumpet Forim" guesstimate"

Re: trouble fluttertonguing in the upper register.

Thanks LOADS, Robin :)

As I've stated in other threads, anyone who tries to teach trumpet technique online without actually observing the problem in question is either A) delusional, B) very dangerous, or C) both of the above.

That said, there are two principles to be observed when flutter tonguing, particularly in the high register: your tongue must be relaxed and you must move lots of focused air. Consider these principles and experiment over many hours if this technique is something you truly want to master.

Best,
EC

Re: trouble fluttertonguing in the upper register.

There are no quick fixes to problems with playing. They require lots of practice and concentration. No one learns to fix problems quickly it takes time.

OK, I'm game. (C)

Hickman (I believe) teaches that the ability to fllutter tongue in all registers is a "proof" that the tongue position is correct. A fun exercise (involving long tones, unfortunately) is to flutter where one can, then stop fluttering, letting the tongue kinda hang out where it wants, and listen to the sound--is it more open, more free? If so, memorize the feeling. Keep trying whilst raising chromatically. If it helps, great! If it doesn't, refer to Ed's comment above.

Have fun!
