![]() ![]() ![]() | Trumpet and laptop Ed, You had mentioned about a program that you can "sync" up with the trumpet for interactive laptop accompaniments. Can you talk more about this? -T

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Trumpet and laptop hey Dave, I know Smart Music well. I actually used it in lessons yesterday :) but I was thinking of something more intense. Like if you played an Ab on the top of the staff the computer would read it and trigger some kind of sonic/musical/computer response. Anything out there ?

![]() | Re: Trumpet and laptop Hi Trent, There are alot of programs that could give you a interactive environment. What it takes is your own imagination and will to learn the language of these programs to get them to do what you want. Max/MSP Puredata CSound Reason (or similar apps. from Propellorhead) Reaktor ( or similar apps, from Native Instruments) That's off the top of my head and I'm sure there are others out there that can give you more info. Come to think of it I think there is a boston based musician doing some trumpet/laptop improv. goodluck, CG

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Trumpet and laptop Trent, Charlie beat me to the punch. I'm a big fan of both Max/MSP and Reaktor. I'll show you a couple of Michael Clarke pieces for trumpet and Max that are absolutely beautiful. Different events in the program (composition, various reverbs, looping, etc.) are triggered by the trumpet line within a pre-determined timeframe. The results are gorgeous and very appealing to both the player (fun to be enveloped in so much color) and the listener. Dave, SmartMusic is a practice tool developed years ago at IRCAM. The programs that Charlie lists are for performance. Cheers, EC |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Trumpet and laptop Trent, Listen to David Rosenboom's Music For Unstable Circuits on one of the Chosen Vale CDs that I gave to you. The soloist (Dan, David's son) plays over David's original electronic "noise" composition. I believe that David used Reason or Reaktor to trigger the different events in the solo trumpet line that is superimposed above the original. To my humble ears the result is stunning. Best, EC |

![]() | Re: Trumpet and laptop Sorry for the quick reply, Ed. A quick question regarding trumpet/laptop compositions especially since you brought up Michael Clarke and David roosenboom. Do they include their patches with the trumpet part or instructions to set up the various effects(?). Or do they leave that up to the performer with instructions for something to happen at a set point in the composition. Or does it end up becoming trumpet w/tape ? Have a happy new year. CG

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Trumpet and laptop Quote:
To the best of my knowledge, Music for Unstable Circuits has only been done interactively with the composer at the laptop * note also Tim Souster's Transistor Radio of St. Narcissus, written for solo flugelhorn (John Wallace) and laptop performer and many more pieces in this style*. MfUC could probably be re-worked for a single performer and foot pedals at some point (?) Michael's pieces come with a Max patch and everything is spelled out in the score and instructions. The program drives the bus based on what it hears and a few clicks at structural points. By the way, readers should understand that there are far more pieces utilizing these formats than simply the above (composers at CalArts are creating Max pieces for trumpet, multiple trumpets, and even brass ensemble as we speak, some triggerd from my Writing for Brass class there). We're trying to move ahead, right? (two steps forward, one step backwards, two steps...) No prob about jumping on, amigo. Happy 2007 EC | |
