Trumpet music by female composers

Hey everyone,

I was reading a thread over on trumpetherald about trumpet music by female composers and thought it was an interesting topic. Here is a list of pieces mentioned over there:

Lauren Bernofsky: Concerto
Alexandra Pakhmutova: Concerto
Alexandra Pakhmutova. Nostalgia
Claude Arrieu: Concerto
Ida Gotkovsky: Concertino
Ida Gotkovsky: Ritournelle
Loretta Jankowski: Sonata
Loretta Jankowski. Tocatella
Violet Archer: Little Suite
Grace Williams Trumpet Concerto
Fireworks in Steel - Janet Beat
Spirit Moves - Roxanna Panufnik (Brass Quintet)
A Dream of the Past - Judith Bingham (Brass Quintet)
Quad (Samuel Beckett) - Jennifer Walshe (A piece of music theatre for Trumpet Quartet)
Keep on Keepin' On - Tansy Davies (Brass Quintet)
Lucifer - Diana Burrell (Violin and Trumpet)
Sally Beamish Trumpet Concerto
Fanfare For an Uncommon Woman, Joan Tower
Libby Larsen: Trumpet Concerto
Libby Larsen Fanfare for the Women
Ellen Zwilich Concerto for Trumpet and Five Players
Ellen Zwilich American Concerto
Ellen Zwilich Clarino Quartet
Lied ohne Worte by Sofia Gubaidulina
Yvonne Desportes: Introduction et Allegro for cornet & piano
Lucia Dlugoszewski: Space is a Diamond for solo trumpet
Germaine Tailleferre: Gaillarde for trumpet & piano
Augusta Read Thomas - Sonata for trpt and piano
Augusta Read Thomas ANGEL TEARS & EARTH PRAYERS
Supplique et Polychromie by Denise Roger (brass quintet)
Ruth Watson Henderson - Intrada (for Trumpet and Piano or Organ)
Betsy Jolas - Episode Troisieme (solo trumpet)
Kelly-Marie Murphy - Fanfare (four trumpets)

I'm curious if anyone has any experience with any of the above or if there are others to add to the list.

72*,

Thanks for your list and for starting this topic. I'm normally not in favor of repeating topics from other trumpet sites, but this one runs in parallel with our gender discussions on this thread.

Don't forget Dlugoszewski's Tender Theater Flight Nageire for brass 5tet and percussion. It's recorded by a pretty good group on CRI (859). Also, since you mention Judith Bingham, check out her The Snows Descend (brass ensemble) sometime. I did it at the Royal Academy of Music in London once upon a time.

Ellen Taaffe Zwilich is an interesting composer. Do you know that Ellen was the producer of Gerry Schwarz' first recordings on Delos (Haydn/Hummel and The Sound of Trumpets with the something called the New York Trumpet Ensemble)?

I'm a big fan of the work of Betsy Jolas, Libby Larson, and Roxanna Panufnik, and even more so of Augusta Reed Thomas and Joan Tower. Sofia Gubaidulina, of course, has become an iconic composer in today's world. Don't forget her Trio (3 trumpets). It's included in a program of contemporary music that some of my students at McGill are touring in January. Germaine Tailleferre was a member of Les Six and should require no introduction here.

As for the others. . . yikes. . . I don't know any of them. Perhaps this is part of the problem discussed here. Comments, anyone?

Watching here,
EC

Gubaidulina also has a piece for two trumpets and piano titled 'Two Ballads.' The Augusta Read Thomas Sonata is (interestingly enough) for solo trumpet without piano.

There is also a wonderful piece by Japanese female composer named Rica Narimoto for solo trumpet titled "Cloud, the Gravestone in the Sky." It was inspired by a vision she had of a cloud outside her window while she was staying in Kyoto.

HyeKyung Lee wrote an interesting piece called 'Frenetic Dream' for trumpet and piano.

Feel free to PM me if you'd like to hear any of these.

Since we're including small ensemble pieces, I would like to add one of my favorites: 'Fantaisie mécanique' for trumpet, trombone, piano, and two percussionists by Unsuk Chin. I've been trying to get the score and parts for over a year but they're rental only.

Matthew,

Augusta withdrew her Sonata from her catalogue. I have it and believe that she made a good decision.

I'd love to hear Frenetic Dream and Cloud, the Gravestone in the Sky. Do you have a link or can you burn them (assuming this is legal) for me?

Best,
EC

CGUM is an unknown quantity at this point
Hyekung lee spent sometime teaching at my alma mater as a guest lecturer. Her composition, what i heard, was really intriguing. She is a marvelous pianist and colaborated with Todd Yukumoto, the saxophone lecturer, on a recital and contributed a really great piece. Difficult as all get out. I believe they recorded it.

On rika narimotos piece it is very effective and I have been in the search for the music for a year now. I have my doubts it got published. Hopefully I'm wrong and my search party over there can locate it for me. Also the CD maybe out of print, also difficult to find.

cheers

I also have a copy of the Augusta Read Thomas' Sonata and agree that it is not her best work. However, she did tell me that she will write a piece for solo trumpet sometime soon, so we have that to look forward to.

CGUM,

Rica Narimoto's piece is published by Ars Publica in Italy (http://arspublica.it/partiture/narimoto.html).
