Trumpet and Trombone

Hi Ed,

Hope all is well with you. Do you still follow Chicago sports at all? Did you hear the Cubs might be in the market for Alex Rodriguez - and that Mark Cuban is in the market for the Cubs?

Anyway!

One of my colleagues here at school is a very fine trombone player and I was looking for some suggestions of duets that would work well with a trombone player or some excerpt passages that would be good to work on with him. I'm hoping to work on intonation, matching style, and gaining some insights on expression. I'm not really looking for recital pieces - just short things to utilize the great resource that I have available to me.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

David

Re: Trumpet and Trombone

Yo, David, My man....I little birdie told me that there may be a book of duets coming out for trumpet and trombone by some really famous playa's. Now this isn't really Huggy's news to drop, but keep your eyes out for the new music releases. I think you'll be happy when this thing surfaces.....Fo' Shizzle!

Love,

Huggy

David,

David Borden's (6) Dialogues for trumpet and trombone are fun, either as concert music or just to work through. They were recorded by Tom Stevens and Ralph Sauer some years ago:

Thomas Stevens Trumpet - Hindemith, Bozza, Badinage, Et Al Classical

Good to hear from you,
EC

Re Chicago sports, I read the Tribune and Sun Times sports sections online every day and contribute occasionally at Bleed Cubbie Blue. An old Red Sox quote (now, obviously, out of date!) comes to mind: "the (Cubs) killed my father and now they're coming after me". So true.

Re: Trumpet and Trombone

Hi David,

Boris Blacher has a divertamento for trumpet trombone and piano that I like very much---I think its my favorite piece for trumpet/trombone. Ray Mase has a recording of this on his 'trumpet in our time' cd.

Jean-Michel Damase also has a trio for the same instrumentation. Its much more of a blow--and is super french in harmony and such. I recommend this less--but if you are looking for something french--this is your guy.

As for the cubbies--bummer, dooders.
