| Pianissimo User | What do you think about when playing? Phil Munds (principal horn, BSO) asked me this yesterday and when I said "oh, I think about the structure, the line, where I'm going with the music" he said that he doesn't think about anything but the breath and how much it calms him. Through a process of non-analysis and just observing what is going on from a distance, he got me to play so much better. So, what do you think about how to achieve this state of "distant oberservation" over "constant analysis"? |

| Re: What do you think about when playing? I think "not-thinking" is the point. If you meditate, you learn to keep attention on your breath - easily, gently. You let all the phenomena around you occur without reacting to them. Of course, this isn't perfectly achieved. We all get distracted. The point is to just come back to where you were. This practice expands your awareness, but you react less to it. I find this sort of calm focus to be a good place to perform from. It's scary at first - because it feels like giving up control - but it actually increases your control by simplifying the whole process. Does that make any sense? |

| Re: What do you think about when playing? Depends on how familiar I am with what I'm playing. If I'm sight-reading something, I'm concentrating on the notes, phrases, and dynamics, while looking ahead as I play. If it's a familiar piece, I'm just putting everything I have into the musicality and my (or the director's) interpretation of the piece. |

| Re: What do you think about when playing? I hope this doesn't come off as a cliche, but I attempt to sing what I am playing, and to hear not only pitch, but timbre, nuance, dynamics etc. What some refer to as "the trumpet in the head becoming the trumpet in my hand".I also talk about this concept with my students. ![]() | Re: What do you think about when playing? B, Since you asked... Please forgive me if this sounds sanctimonious, but the very last thing I'm thinking about when I'm performing is playing the trumpet. I'm with the composer, creating the composition. Nothing more, nothing less. EC Last edited by ecarroll : 02-16-2007 at 09:50 PM. |

![]() | Re: What do you think about when playing? Brek, By truly understanding the composition (yes, this takes individual time and effort) and remaining fully in the moment while performing it. It's not magic, really. . . it's often no more than hard work coupled with deep listening (disclaimer: occasionally magic happens as well). Best from Montreal, EC |
