Why music? Why trumpet?

Hi Ed (and everyone),

Every once and a while I go through a period of time that I wonder why I'm in music, why I play the trumpet, and why I am will to make such big sacrifices for it. Is this common? Is this normal?

More importantly, why do you "do" music? What motivates and inspires you?

Thanks!
Brent

It is the only thing I do that brings a sense of peace into my life. Not to mention the excitement of performing. And yes, chicks do dig trumpet players!

Brent,

Sensitive artists question everything so yes, in my opinion, you're perfectly normal.

Let's start by telling us what brought you to music in the first place?

Best and watching here with great interest,
EC

Re: Why music? Why trumpet?

I go through those same emotions every now and then so you seem pretty normal to me. The trumpet is an unforgiving instrument and I don't know how many times I've said to myself "Why didn't I stick with my piano lessons??".

For me, because it is such a hard instrument to master (IMO), the satisfaction is bigger when things click. When you're on stage and nail every note to the wall, when music pours out of the bell you didn't know you had in you...

Sorry.. I got a bit carried away there..

Re: Why music? Why trumpet?

I've found that in all the different forms of expression mankind has, music is the only one that can state multiple emotions at the same time. The trumpet can be loud and beautiful at the same time. Playing the trumpet can and should be a passion. That's why I do it.

Brent, there are questions that need no answers. You think about sacrifice AFTER you look back. During the playing experience, it is no sacrifice, it is the essence of your soul. It is an "investment" not a sacrifice!
Why music? In many cases because we were lousy at sports! I know trumpet players turned golfers, but not the other way around.
Why trumpet? Most real trumpet players revel in the power and glory. I think only playing a BIG pipe organ could give a similar thrill, although with the organ, the tone production is external and detached from your body.
We all gave up normal when we got serious about the trumpet.
Think about how many people have walked away happy having heard you play - even a simple melody at church. Think about how many people have walked away proud after hearing you play - probably more than you can remember. Give the gift, spread it around - no sacrifice, no doubts only a future with many surprises!
