![]() | Your Personal Repertoire? TMers, I feel that in many ways our repertoire choices define who we are as musicians. What pieces do you feel that you absolutely own? (can fall out of bed and play, perhaps are memorized, have performed multiple times, etc.) Are you keeping track of them? If so, post them here please. . . Thanks in advance, EC |

| Piano User | Re: Your Personal Repertoire? Ed, Great topic! I take my choice of repertoire very seriously and I go through a lot before I decide to take on a piece. Here are a couple I have now performed a few times (some memorized) and really love playing: Antheil-Sonata for Trumpet Kagel-Morceau de Concours Makiko Nishikaze-Northern Stars Sofia Gubaidualina-Song Without Words There is a piece that I'm working on now that HAS to go on this list when I'm done preparing it and have it well under my belt. It's a wonderful piece by the Austrian composer Olga Neuwirth entitled Laki. It still needs quite a bit of work but it's one that I feel like I can really make my own. I've performed Haydn several times now from memory but as it's played so well by so many people I hardly feel like I can call it mine. -Matthew |

![]() | Re: Your Personal Repertoire? Bach: Wiehnachtsoratorium Tiel 1-3 80+ times, 4-6 20+ times, Germany and USA. Bach: Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen 20+ times, Germany and the Czech Republic. Orff: Carmina Burana in Paris, Freiburg, and USA. In Paris, the bass solist was the same one I had performed the Wiehnachtsoratorium with a few months prior. These are all peices that felt like they were written for me even at the first reading. Wierd. What are yours, Ed? |

![]() | Re: Your Personal Repertoire? Vulg, The Weihnachtsoratorium and H-moll Messe are certainly on my list, as is the 2nd Brandenburg, but I'd like to wait until most responses are in to reveal my own. Best, EC Last edited by ecarroll : 04-24-2008 at 09:59 PM. |

| New Friend | Re: Your Personal Repertoire? Hi Everyone, these are all pieces I have memorized and consider part of who I am as a musician. They are all recent pieces. There were others in the past that had similar affects on me, but these are just what's current. Kryl by Robert Erickson Exposed Throat by H.K Gruber Solus by stan Friedman Paths by Takemitsu Persichetti Parable the only piece from the above list I couldn't go without playing ever again and still be content as a musician is Kryl. The others have a close and personal relationship with my ears but none go by in a blink of an eye like kryl. the blink is what i want in music, because that means i have transcended the perception of feeling whats coming up or what just happened. I get stuck in exactly what is in my head and coming out the bell. (not to say that it's always ideal!!) There is actually more music that I have only listened to that speaks to me more clearly than playing any monophonic trumpet music or solo rep. recently, i've been waaay into all xenakis and Kagel's music. I've also been going back to old school orchestral rep like Mahler and Shosti. Messian's Quartet for the End of Time has also left a serious impact on my perception of what music means to me. Wozzeck is also in the class of 'mess me up' for a day if i get into it. I hope to add the Morceau De Concours to my list soon as well as the Berio over the summer. (Matt, would you mind helping me out with the Kagel at CV?) Although, the Kagel speaks to me more immediately than the Sequenza, I haven't quite wrapped my brain around the berio, still too visual and on the page. sorry for being cryptic and also for my poor writing and grammar. oh yeah, the adagio from Shosti 8 puts me to tears every time. cheers everyone. | Re: Your Personal Repertoire? I'll be very happy when I own 'Quiet City'. I know it's been recorded by some great players but it's the one piece I keep gavitating back to. I know that there are more complex, technical pieces out there, some of which I (try to) play . It just seems to capture me every time I play it.
