Another Newbie

Hello.

Another comeback player here.

I took up trumpet when I was a Junior in HS, and although I seemed to have a knack for it, I never practiced that much (mainly joined the band to meet girls, as a social activity, etc.)

I did play some in college, but again, I never took it seriously.

Recently, at the urging of my supervisor at work, I joined a New Horizons band here in Central KY.

I got my Bach Strad refurbed, and I've been practicing now for a couple of months.

Hard to believe, but I never owned an Arban's. I picked one up at at local music store and I'm just starting with the early exercises. (pages 12, 13, and 14)

At this point, I'm working on airflow, endurance, and getting back my old range (about a C above the staff)

I don't push it (as far as the range), I'm thinking that will come in time. If it's not comfortable, I let it go.

Anyway, advice, suggestions, and stories are welcome.

It's great to be back playing again.

Re: Another Newbie

As you age that instinct with respect to trumpet playing and the opposite sex doesn't change (thankfully) but it does give you a whole lot of more interesting pick-up lines, and there is the "myth" about trumpeteers and their lips. I do find that the women I find attractive are older than those who used to attract me (including and especially my lovely wife). It's interesting the way attitudes towards the loves of our lives change, and sometimes mature, - at least most of us don't collect vintage wives nor do we need to clean them in salty water. (NO - don't go any further).

Yeah, I know.

It's like I told my father the other day. Now that I'm playing, to actually LEARN, it's amazing how much I enjoy it (and progress)
