Checking in from San Diego, CA

Hello, My name is Don Shaffer. I've been playing various horns off and on for 30+ years. I like playing older jazz and blues music, occasionally out in public, but mainly in my studio using Aebersold play along CD's or Band in a Box.

I currently own the following four instruments and am looking to add a cornet to the line up soon.

YamahaYTR-738 Trumpet. Purchased in the early 80's used. It gives a big tone and has served me well over the years.
Yamaha YTR-6310ZS "Bobby Shew Trumpet" Purchased new around 2000. This is a great horn. A little easier to play above the above the staff than the 738.
King 2020 Flugelhorn Purchased new around 1996. I really like the tone of this horn. Valves aren't as smooth as the two Yamaha's, but I will never sell this horn.
Yamaha YSL-354V Valve Trombone purchased in 2007 used. Still trying to figure out if I can double on the bigger mouthpiece. My range is limited, but the tone is improving. Switch back to Trumpet after playing this takes me a minute or two to adjust which is a problem when I'm playing shows.

I'll be posting to get some advice on Cornets. I really like the sound and style of the late, great Ruby Braff. My favorite player has always been Clark Terry since I heard the Pablo recording with him and Oscar Peterson when I was in High School. That recording can't be beat. I recently saw Clark on a Jazz Cruise. He was wonderful.

If I can offer advice on any of my horns, don't hesitate to send me a message.

    Thanks,

    Don

Welcome! I'm a little north of you up the coast. I have a few cornets around here if you want to try some vintage Olds for grins and giggles.

Thanks Ed for the info about Flip Oaks. His site is great.

Mr. Mendez, I won't be showing you any pics of my horns. I'm a use and abuse type of guy. That cornet is a beaut.

    Take care,

    Don

Thank you! It is actually a 1929 Olds symphony model. Stop by anytime and kick some tires....
