Comeback Trumpeter Interested in Funk, Soul and Jazz Music

Hello everyone,

As an addition to playing the bass and guitar, I decided to pick-up the trumpet again. I have not played the trumpet since high school, which was twenty years ago.

In order to redevelop my former playing skills, I am implementing the following plan:
  • Practice regularly (at least 5 times per week)
  • Take weekly private trumpet lessons
  • Work through the Rubank method books
  • Learn jazz tunes via Jamey Aebersold play-a-longs
  • Lastly, join a local community college jazz band later this year
My goal is to have the music abilities, on the trumpet, to join a funk, soul or jazz band with a horn section. Although I realize that this goal is going to take a few years to accomplish, it will be a fun personal pursuit.

With that said, if anyone has any tips or information he or she would like to share to help guide this aspiring funk, soul and jazz trumpeter in the right direction, please feel free to share.

Thanks,

Ted
