Fired up and ready to blow!!

Hello trumpet heads<

I have been reading on the forum for a while and can tell there are a lot of us "coming back to the trumpet after 20 yrs" types. I played all through HS, was first chair in a stage band in Austin,TX then went on to play in a Jazz ensamble for about 4-5 yrs; then I found the guitar. I have played the guitar since and love that instrument. My son is now 13 and wants to play the Trumpet. After a few sessions trying to help him I rediscovered the joy of making music with your whole body! There's just something more intimate about making music and expressing yourself with a wind instrument to your lips.
I still play and love the guitar but am really excited to get back into the trumpet! Some things have changed though. When I was playing I was into the bright and crisp sounds of Al Hirt, Phil Driscoll, Maynard, and Rafael. Now the sound people seem to be interested in is a "darker more centered" tone. I love that tone and just picked up a 1955 Olds Recording for a steal (I couldn't pass it up) I am looking forward to getting my chops back in shape and experimenting with this horn. I'll have tons of questions to come and I can see that the folks on this site are passionate about the horn and seem more than willing to impart many years of experience and knowledge!

Re: Fired up and ready to blow!!

Thanks! I have a ton of questions: mutes? mouthpieces? how to strip the last bit of finish off the horn to make it look even? does the silent brass really work? . . . I guess I'll look for an appropriate thread and start reading

Re: Fired up and ready to blow!!

Howdy Claymor!

That Olds Recording is just a great horn - enjoy.

I'd be real careful on stripping the finish - don't want to ruin that baby.

As to the Silent Brass - I like it - use it with my flugel - but you have to be ok with tethers and wires - you have the little amp hangin on your belt - the earphones, and the wires from the mute - not everyone like being tethered like that - and if you move around - you can get caught on stuff.....but I like the feedback from the amplified mute vs. using say a Denis Wick practice mute - but maybe that's just my old ears talking.... The Denis Wick practice mute would also work well on keeping the noise down - and isn't bad at all - I just prefer what I'm able to hear with the Silent Brass.

Best of luck.

Re: Fired up and ready to blow!!

Welcome back. I'm doing the same thing. I bought the Silent Brass system and I really like it. It's a little annoying with the cords (as mentioned above), but not as annoying as listening to your wife about playing at midnight!

The only real complaint about it that I have is that when you hook into the MP3 player, it's a little scratchy...but still very cool and worth the $100. Good luck!
