Flute player trying the trumpet

Hello all I have been playing the flute for 14 months and really love the instrument but I have decided to try the trumpet again. I say again because I had a go at it a couple years ago and had a lot of trouble with getting a sound out of it. I really love the sound of the trumpet though and I regret not having any success with it. Anyway I bought a Yamaha YTR-2335 off ebay and maybe my flute playing experience will help somewhat.

People say that flute players switch to trumpet very well. If you dedicate yourself, you'll do fine.

Re: Flute player trying the trumpet

I have seen two very successful non professional playing mates switch between flute and tuba in one case, and flute and trombone in another and carry off the transition well. From a different perspective, my eldest son steps out with a young lady you switches between flute to alto sax - yeah, I don't know why either.
So, give it a go, it may not assist your embouchure but it may assist your sight reading.

In American Jazz and Dance bands the saxaphone section doubles on flute.

Ooops. My apologies to anyone offended by my previous comment - no nastiness intended.

Re: Flute player trying the trumpet

Welcome!
I had trouble too when i was first trying to get a note out(I nearly played flute but I decided on trumpet instead)
My first band director initially played flute and now is a professional trumpet player so it definitely can be done!
I'd suggest sitting down with a good player at some point soonish and asking for a little basic set-up help

I think flutes are able to switch to any brass instrument well. I've heard that it's because the embrochure is similar (except that the flute embrochure does not directly contact the mouthpiece) I think in the Arban's book it says somewhere in the beginning that the double and triple tonguing concept for brass was borrowed from flutes.

anyway, I know a flutist who had to switch to tuba for marching band. By the end of sophmore year, he made it to Wind Ensemble in Tuba.
So yea, switch from flute to brass is definitely plausible.

Re: Flute player trying the trumpet

Hi, I've just joined and noticed this thread - I'd been playing flute for 25 years when I got a tenor horn ( British Eb). Within 9 months I was playing in a Senior British Brass Band so yes the transition is definitely possible.

Did it mess up your flute chops?
