Hello all, just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a PhD candidate in Physics at the University of Kansas, but in my spare time I enjoy playing the trumpet and photography. And since we're on the trumpet forum here, let me elaborate: I've been playing the trumpet for about 17 years. I've played with local bands in Bavaria (especially the "Erpftinger Bu'am"), and served my military service in the German Air Force Band. I play a Ganter Magnum and a Selmer Piccolo, but also have a Getzen Flugelhorn and a Yamaha 4320 (my first trumpet, but it still plays very fine). If you want to know more, just message me! Cheers, Rainer

Re: Hello from Kansas! Wow! from Germany to Kansas, I can't help but picture the scene from the movie "The Three Amigos" where the German enters the old west bar and the locals start to tease him about his shiny little pistols. He of course turns out to be excellent at the quick draw and shoots several of them. It's really a funny movie! Anyway welcome. Kansas has tons of really nice folks and really excellent steak. If you like beef, you're in the right place. Also make sure you learn where to go in case of tornadoes and learn about the warning sirens. Maybe hook up with some storm chasers and photograph some lightning and tornadoes. This forum is really great because you have the chance to interact with folks from all different backgrounds, many professional players and artists in residence. Welcome.

Re: Hello from Kansas! Hey Rainer, Welcome. I was in the 389th U.S. Army Band & after I got out, I was in the Army Reserve band right there in Lawrence KS. where you are. You got me wondering how similar the German Air Force bands are to the U.S. military bands. Brad

Re: Hello from Kansas! Hello again, and thanks a lot for the warm welcome! Kansas definitely has some excellent steak, but I'm sure that Nebraska and Iowa steak are just as delicious. As for tornadoes, I haven't seen any myself yet, but I got some nice pictures of lightning. One of them is attached below. And for the comparison between German and US military bands: I've been to one concert of "The United States Air Force Band" and I was quite impressed. The performance was amazing, with them even playing some background tunes while the announcer said something about the next song. The concerts with the German Air Force Band were more like regular wind ensemble concerts, with a nice mix of music from Classical to Modern to Traditional. But we also had the mandatory official business with marches and anthems. Our marching was straight-line marching only, though, far less spectacular than what even high-school marching bands can do. Viele Grüße, Rainer
