Hello from sunny Sydney!

Hi eveyone---I just found this site by accident, you know, chasing one thread after the other and sooner or later you're here!
I'm an expat American who's been playing Principal in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra since 1978---time flies when you're having fun! The Sydney Opera House is a great "office" to have, as I tell my non-musician friends. Actually the concert hall is one of the largest around and a lot of the sound tends to go straight up into the sails, so it can be a bit of work at times...
We're basically committed BACH players here, as well as playing Schagerl rotary trumpets in most of the Germanic repertoire. The orchestra is quite a busy one, giving around 140 concerts per year and touring occasionally.
Here's the SSO website: sydneysymphonydotcom.
Hope to meet and chat with lots of you soon!

Re: Hello from sunny Sydney!

Hi Dan! My husband and I are going to Brisbane at the end of February to visit family. I know, I know, not even remotely close, but still. :) It will be my first time 'down under' and I can't wait!

What is classical concert attendance like down your way?

Re: Hello from sunny Sydney!

Hi Misty,
Nice to meet you! Classical attendance isn't too bad, when you consider that if its a good program with a good conductor, we can fill the hall three times a week. The Concert hall at the Opera House holds around 2900 people.
Of course in Australia, people are sports-mad and the arts community in general has to really fight to be heard---I think that's a bit better balanced in the US and the UK. Must be our weather....
Have a great time in Brisbane---shame you aren't coming down to Sydney.

Welcome Dan,

I'm a Sydney sider in exile. I started going to Sydney Symphony concerts when they were in Sydney Town hall (showing my age), much prefer the Opera House!!

Great orchestra guys and girls. Go and listen if you can.
