Hi from brem in Quebec City, QC, Canada

Hi dear colleagues!

My name is Martin Breton, but friends call me brem. I live and come from Quebec City, QC, Canada and speak French.

I've been playing the Bb trumpet since high school where I was in the school harmony, then the Big Band. I played with Big Bands until early college years. Then, friends and I formed a band, playing mostly covers of R&B, soul, swing, 60s music. We were fairly successful, played more than 20 gigs but probably less than 100 in the 3-4 years the band existed.

I switched from a cheap Yamaha to a used Bach Stradivarius model 37 lightweight, serial no. from around 1975. It's scratched beyond belief, but that's my baby :).

When I graduated from university as a programmer, the others also graduated and some of them went out of town, so the band split.

I stopped playing then, for 5 years i believe.

So if I count right, I've been playing trumpet on and off for 19 years.

Recently, my former sax player asked me to join him in a ska/jazz band and I accepted. So now I'm getting back in shape.

I'm rusty, I can't get high notes as I used to, I lost a bit of my tone and hope to gain it back.

We practice together twice a week.

So any tips you can give me, I'm willing to ear.

Also,I write a blog at brem experience [en]

Welcome Brem!
You will get your tone back and if you do not treat your face too brutally, the range too!
Your Bach would probably appreciate some professional care. When you get some spare change, take it to a decent repair person and have them look at the valves, check if there is corrosion or red rot inside, whether the felts and corks are still OK.
The rewards are a much longer life for the horn AND over all easier playing.
Have a great time with the Ska band!

Soit Bienvenu, Brem!
Have fun!

Re: Hi from brem in Quebec City, QC, Canada

Thanks all for the warm welcome!

The trumpet is fine. The pistons and felts are pristine. It's mostly dents and scractches and acid erosion on the lacquer outside.

It was that way when I bought it almost 20 years ago, and aside from an accident where the bell got bent (and unbent), I didn't deteriorate it any further.

What do you think could be done to revamp it? How much would it cost?

Re: Hi from brem in Quebec City, QC, Canada
