Hi Folks :)

Hi all,

Just a quick intro and hello really. I came across this forum while looking for something else Cornet/Trumpet related. I have have always said - one day I will learn to play some jazz trumpet - just really because I have always thought it was very cool sounding stuff. Well, recently I came across a Besson Soveriegn Cornet at a car boot sale (kind of like a yard sale in america - but everything is displayed in the trunk of a car, along with hundreds of other cars - just for the americans who may not know what a car boot sale is :) )

Anyway, I digress. I bought the cornet and have been looking online for some very simple first step type things but there is very little. I know I am going to have to find a tutor of course, but I am so keen to get going ha ha. I keep taking it out of the case and making awful noises with it, or just looking at it he he.

I know nothing about cornets. It seems to be in good condition, all the valves work smoothly and the slide is okay - except it doesn't retract all the way back without a slight nudge when it is a few millimetres away. I am sure it jsut need oiling a little but I dont have a clue where to start - or in fact, what the slide is actually for, other than something to do with tuning? Well, as you can see I am a total newbie so please don't get all jargonistic with me. Let me know if this is the place to ask for help and advice. Other than that hello and I am glad to be a member :)

Thanks fellas. I wish I knew somebody locally who actually plays, that way I could at least get all the technical info I need, like maintenance, oiling, cleaning, mouthpiece differences etc. Oh well, it will all be revealed in the fullness of time ha ha. Am I right in thinking though, that if I learn to play cornet I can apply the same knowledge to trumpet? I am very keen on playing the trumpet.

There are lots of resources online including videos on Youtube about the care and feeding of cornets (and trumpets). Try a search for something like 'Trumpet Maintenance'.

Yes, everything that you learn about the cornet can be transferred to the trumpet. However, once you learn the cornet, you may find that you are content to stay with it. The cornet is a wonderful instrument and has lots of applications in playing.
