| Howdy! I am new to the trumpet and new to trumpeting. I have always loved music and I have played the guitar since I was fourteen. The trumpet was something I wanted to take up when I was a kid but never got around to it. I just turned 41 in December and I am just getting started as of about seven months ago. I am just a kid in man's clothing. I have started out with a beat up old cornet, a Pan-American, which I am told is a good horn. I paid $30.00 for the horn and the beat up case and paid $50.00 to get it repaired so I could use it properly. Now, how can you beat that? I bought a Hal Leonard beginner's book the day I picked up the horn from the repair shop and I haven't put down the horn since. I absolutely love it and it comes to me naturally. Even the cheesy Hal Leonard tunes are a blast to play. I love reading music and studying music theory as well. Half the battle is already won! Looks like this is going to stick on me for a long time. Might as well advance myself in this endeavor. The horn has a dull, silvery finish on it. It looks like shinier in some spots and more dull in others. I think the finish is hatched. I don't think it can be brought back, though I don't really know and can't say for sure. Nonetheless, the repairman did a fantasic job in fixing it from a functional standpoint and I hardly recognized the horn when I picked it up and brought it home. It plays great and the valves don't stick. I love cleaning it and oiling it and greasing it as much as I love playing it. It is a beautiful thing. I don't know diddly about mouthpieces, aside from the fact that my horn came with two of them - and one is much easier to use than the other. I use the one that is easier to use. The other one makes a great decoration on my nic-nac shelf. Some of the advice I have been given is, first and foremost, take some lessons from a good teacher. I am looking for a good teacher in the Las Vegas area. Know any good ones who would be willing to give a novice a few good lessons? Anyway, that's all about me, the New Trumpeter. Great forum you've got here, by the way. I am enjoying it very much. |

| Forte User | Welcome to the board and to trumpeting! I think all of us here are (or will be once they read it) very excited to see you picking up the horn. Truly an inspiration. |
