![]() | Looking for students of Carlton MacBeth Hello, I am a comeback trumpet player and I am looking for former students of Carlton MacBeth. I am interested in knowing if there are any video recordings of him giving clinics and finding out more about Carlton and Louis Maggio. BAK |

![]() | Re: Looking for students of Carlton MacBeth 1) Do you have his Maggio book (yellow with the monkey on the front)? 2) Are you fairly adept at playing pedal notes down to at least an octave below low F#? (Down to two octaves below low C is better.) Is your private teacher against pedal tones? I have not studied with a Maggio or MacBeth personally, but have had teachers who were trained by Claude Gordon, Carmine Caruso, James Stamp and Jerome Callet. For me, the purpose of playing in the pedal register is to find the best placement for your embouchure on the rest of the range of the trumpet. It also aids in ear training and relaxing. I don't do them in an isolated way (sitting and playing pedals for two hours!), but the way that these methods I've mentioned - high, then low, high, then low...... Enter into this kind of work with an open mind. If your private teacher and the use of these exercises point out weaknesses, you may have to change some things. It's all for the goal of making you the best player possible. Best wishes! P.S. - If you do have the Maggio book, start playing Warmup C at the start of your practice each day. Later you can add Lessons 8, 10, 7 and others until you have a flexible routine depending on how busy you are with other things in life. I try to always start the day with Warmup A and Lesson 1, though. (Don't push it to go too high!) |

![]() | Re: Looking for students of Carlton MacBeth Hello Jim Kot and thanks for the kind words. You are also a nice person to talk to and also one of the people that motivated me, although you probably don't know that you did, to buy a Destino. Thank you for that great personal advice. I love my Destino 3*. I have been trying to get through to BAK and wrote him a long message which he didn't get for some reason. For any of you out there who are interested in Carlton MacBeth and Louis Maggio I would like to offer my free services in giving you any information I can to help you along. Carlton was not only my teacher but also a life long friend who was always very kind to me. He was the perfect example of what a teacher can be to a student and in his honor I will attempt to return the favor as best I can with the understanding that Carlton was a much greater trumpet player than me and I am only a shadow of him. Never the less I can try to faithfully relay what he taught me. To simply things, I would prefer that any communications with me come to the address above that Jim Kot listed: GIGS.inc@comcast.net Alan Craig |
