Marc, Adelaide South Australia

Hi I am sorry I wasn't aware of giving an account of myself.
I am one of these folks that threw myself into the trumpet in my early 20,s and then let it slip into the background when wife and kids, houses etc. came along. About 6 years ago (at age 54) I realised that with the trumpet it was kind of 'now or never' and I decided to dust my horn off and give it my heart. It was a hard road to start. I somehow managed to get into a certificate course in jazz trumpet in our University here in Adelaide and quit one of my jobs to go full time. Got another couple of years (3 all up) and I feel I have clawed back most of what I lost. I love the thing now. Got in with some other guys similar age and working hard to get something together to perform. Love playing along with Aebersolds and whoever else I can tee up with. I have managed to sit in with a lot of jazz guys around my town but it can be a 'clicky' scene. Trumpet can be frustrating at times - with good days/bad days but you've just got to press on. Got a Bobby Shew Flugel last year and that's put another dimension into things as well. Music is timeless and exciting. Cheers

Welcome and Congrats - you've really put a lot of effort and discipline into coming back on the horn. Not easy to do! Enjoy that flugel - I have the same one - with the Bobby Shew mpc really gets a nice sound. Make sure you use a lightweight oil on the valves - or they get sticky (so I've noticed) and the light oil makes all the difference. Also fond of Getzen's - still have my old Severinsen model after 40+ plus years!

Keep makin music down under!

Regards

Re: Marc, Adelaide South Australia

Thanks for your message R Good. Yes I love the Bobby Shew Flugel and have just changed from Holten oil to Yamaha Synthetic Light. I bought a second hand Getzen Doc Sev. recent model (sometime after 2000). I was dissapointed when it arrived - kind of felt blocked. I ended up getting a round crook from the US and it definitely opened it up. It's got a great sound and feels good in many ways but the Bobby Shew Flugel has something that's missing on the Getzen (even though its a Flugel). I don't fully understand a lot of the terms I see (slotting, free blowing etc.) but maybe that's it - 'free blowing'. I see your from 'deep in Texas' - long way from here though I've heard similar in climate in some ways
Cheers
Marc

Re: Marc, Adelaide South Australia

Marc -

The Severinsen was a relatively big bore open blowing horn when it was originally designed and released. Supposed to be especially good for the high notes (Doc's specialty). As to "slotting" - I take that it means that when you go to hit the notes - you don't miss with that horn - the notes hit the "slot".

As to the weather similarities - hear you need some rain - we go through some dry spells too - but yours sounds a bit frightening. Hope things improve. Meanwhile - we just dodge tornadoes and hail.....

Regards,

Bob
