Re: New Member

Welcome to TM, enjoy your stay. The best advice for right now is to find a good teacher and do what they tell you.

Hello there in Texas. So, don't feel alone. There are a LOT of returning players here in our 'comeback club'. Many of us had layoffs of 20, 30, 40 even 50 years (the record here as far as I know is 51 years). I was off for over 30 years so I know what you are going through. So, here are some questions to aid us in giving you some starting tips:
(1) Do you still have a trumpet to play or are you looking for one?
(2) Do you live in an area with ready access to a music store where you can refresh your memory about all things trumpet and, hopefully, find an instructor?
(3) What sort of playing do you plan to do?

Remember, a trumpet is a "social instrument" which means that it needs to be played with other instruments. It cannot play chords by itself and you can play in a closet for only so long. So, whether you play to play gospel songs or hymns in a worship setting, or jazz, or pop music, or symphonic band/orchestra, or just a small 'jam session' group, you need to know what direction to head in. Once you have developed a bit of range and endurance and sense of rhythm, look for a local band or other group to join. I started my comeback 4 months ago and last month joined a community band. I am having a ball. I don't keep up with everyone else quite yet but they still let me come back and are rather encouraging to me.

Good luck to you.

Re: New Member

Thanks for the tips. I have a vintage Olds (possibly mid 60's. I also joined a local community band and having a struggle keeping up. I am financially strapped for private lessons. Is anyone familiar with Atlanta's Brass Society instructional CD's? I am concidering ordering something. Just wondering what others experience has been with these products.

Thanks Again!

I am not familiar with that set of CD's but I would bet that they are helpful and useful if you decide to go that way. Also, search this forum for posts that contain references to resource materials - there are many here. Some of the materials are downloadable and printable narrative, others are CD's (some prepared by TM members), look for sponsors to this forum, and check out Youtube - there are some introductory clips there, too. You might also ask some of the other players in the community band that you joined.

Good luck. This is the fun part.
