![]() | New member intro. I'm also a new member. I'm a fledgling guitar player that just got trumpet lessons from my wife and daughter for my 52nd birthday. I tried it and liked it. I find the trumpet more intuitive than the guitar and have quickly fallen in love with playing it. Quick question: Can anyone recommend a good practice mute so that I don't drive my family crazy when I practice? I've seen the peacemaker with headphones and also the more advanced Yamaha system. This would allow me to practice at night without getting arrested!!!! Any disadvantaged to practicing with a mute? Thanks for your input in advance |

![]() ![]() | Re: New member intro. Very welcome to TM, dpa10! I use the Best Brass practising mute, but ONLY if I really have to. There are two disadvantages of playing with a mute: * You donīt hear yourself properly * The resistance/backpressure makes your playing feel differently I have tried the Silent Brass mute and didnīt like it too much . . . More advice will come from others soon!

![]() | Re: New member intro. Hi dpa10, I use the Yamaha Silent Brass system a lot and find it acceptable for what it is, although it is a bit expensive, but if you decide to go for this you need to replace the ear phones with some better ones, for example iPod ones. I find this system very useful despite the disadvantages mentioned by the Swede (-: |

![]() | Re: New member intro. Thanks for the replies regarding the practice mute. I got the Denis Wick. Some reviewers claimed it effected the intonation less than others, and since I want to develop my trumpet ear I thought this would be important. This willb e good for at least working out timing to songs when people are sleeping. It seems I still may be relegated to the basement though. It still makes a substantial sound. A bit more resistant, but I need to learn some dynamic range anyway. |

![]() ![]() | Re: New member intro. Welcome dpa10. All of us adult players, whether newbies or comeback players, face the same issues. I tell people - only half jokingly - that I am not let out of the closet (where I play amid the clothes) when polite company is around. So, that is an issue that we all deal with. But, if you keep up your practice, you might gain some respectability so that your family does not need to worry about all of the side glances and whispered comments when they are seen with you in public. It's all part of the glory of trumpeteering.
