![]() | Newby looking for bore advice Greetings from snowy northern Utah. I am back at it after a 17-year layoff. Bought an old (but great condition) Conn Victor 80A cornet from a good west coast dealer. It has a hellishingly big bore (.481). While I enjoy how freely it blows I am finding problems with flexibility and, of course, stamina. I am 68 and have only been back at it about 4 months. My prior horns have been Martin Committee model (med bore in my teens), a Bach NY Strad (ML bore in my 20s), and later a Schilke, also med or med large. I think my range was probably best on the Martin, but that is conflated with my youth. I am looking for a good discussion (or site) on bore sizes and the relation with back pressure, free blowing, etc. My primary interest now is improvising the American song book and, if I get any of it back, sitting in some rehearsal bands. Any help out there? graysono |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Newby looking for bore advice I personally think Bore size is the SINGLE most overrated factor in trumpet design. I have a 57 Conn 38B with a miniscule 438 bore that plays more freely than any other horn in my collection. run a search and you'll probably dig up a bunch of info! Regards, Trent

![]() | Re: Newby looking for bore advice Welcome Grey! Hope you enjoy the boards! I made no equipment changes until about a year in my comeback. And now, there's been no changes per se, just some additions. Pretty much a lot of shifting sand until the chops get some consistency to them. At least in my case. All the Best, Richard Oliver |
