![]() | Not kidding: I really CAN play higher than you... That's how you know I'm a trumpet player... Hello and greetings to all here. Good blessings all around and all that basic stuff. Wat more to say? Well write that is. A little about me: I don't just touch the third rail but can actually pick it up with my teeth. Before breakfast. People have been known to get heart attacks just watching the voltage go through my body and yet leave me unharmed. I play well but not what I would call virtuouso. Close at times. or can fool others. Good to very good in most levels. Or at least well in tune. Accurate high register. "Read a Gee" in other words. I try to entertain. Who brags about playing in tune? Well a working musician might. Fingers are decent. That's another way to tell a good trumpet player: Works that third finger as hard or harder than his endurance or range. Ditto sight reading too. later! |

Trumpet players, especially beginners are "center lip" focussed. This is due to the newness of the game. And a little bit of muscular contraction inside the mouthpiece can be exercised to a certain point. However after one ascends somewhere above the staff any excessive inner lip contraction will cut off the sound. This is easily provable and one of the paradoxes of trumpet playing: Significant muscular development is necessary for range production but not inside the mouthpiece. I think that trombone players and other low brass can afford to be center lip focussed more so than trumpet players. The low brass mouthpiece is so large that even with some muscular contraction inside the lips can't quite lock off the tone. At least not through most of the trombonist's range. But a trumpet player doesn't have much margin of error. | |
